These are really not that hard to make if you don't mind spending some time and making one from scratch. The only draw back is having the proper tools and basic wood-working skills. |
When I upgraded to my M3Ds from MK2s I decided to build myself a cabinet thing. I mean I took shop class in high-school. I made the little wood bowl on the laythe, I've built a few decks and sheds in backyards. But let me tell you - making furniture is a completely different ballgame.
Planned it all out, got the wood, put the thing all together nice. Viola! Perfection! I load it up w/ records and my mixer and my turntables and play, play away with my new technics.
Few days later, I go away for 1 week on business. When I return I walk into my place and my "masterpiece" is split right down the center and my brand new technics (with about 1 hour of play on them) are sitting platter side down on my floor.
As it turns out, I'm not all that good of a carpenter.
The 4 foot fall from my collapsed cabinet cracked the platter & platter magnet on both turntables, and broke both tone-arms. Luckily the main drive units were unharmed as the platters must have slid off before it hit the ground.
Replacement platters + platter magnets are about $225 each (x 2), tone arms are about $125 each (x 2). Add in labor, and a general tune up to my M3Ds and we were up to close to $800.
So - $500 in wood and $800 in repairs later I'm looking to BUY something PRE-MADE. NOT make my own.
