Iraq turnover comes two days early

I'm sure you're all waking up to the news, or are just hearing the news now, but the turnover has happened two days before the June 30th deadline. This seems to me to be a very smart move, as I'm sure that day would have been marked with numerous terrorist activities. I for one hope that this quells some of the violence and hopefully will lead to a much more peacful Iraq...for everyone's sake. Sadly, I'm not sure if it will. Any thoughts?

Very smart move. Attacks planned for the 30th have been preempted, and Iraqis have their new nation. Iraq is sovereign, Saddam will be indicted by the Iraqi people in just one week, and NATO has decided to step up to the plate by training troops!

A very good day.

Bet you a lot of those freedom fighters, terrorists, and the whole sort are scratching their heads, they'll just blow up their bombs tonight instead to show what jihadis they are while cutting off the heads off the hostages they currently have. At any rate I would have done better to see the U.S. military leaving but alas that can't happen now.

I must agree that it was a tactically smart maneuver in the short term.

I have doubts that it will curb the violence in the long term, however. Like NYCTrancefan mentioned, they'll just regroup and attack another day.

Things will still be very turbulent over the next few months.. this was a big step.. but.. it will remain transparent until such a time that Iraqis 'feel' that their country is theirs again - which is still a long ways away, imo.

Good move indeed at least it makes it looks better, terror attacks on independent day wouldn't exactly be the best thing to happend....

i agree with what some already have pointed out tho, that the iraqis will still not feel free. there's still a lot of foreign troops in there (which is still necesarily) and the government is appointed by the US and they are obviously very pro US.

When I first heard the news at like 3am I had to check my calendar just to make sure Was very smart, especially with 5 foreigners being threatened of beheading which I would guess would have all happened on the same day. Would have been a disaster.

Too bad Tim Robbins isn't! (Agreed though, one of my favorite movies).
