I use Cubase/Protools in the studio and cubase on my laptop (with firewire hardware). This is all I need to laydown some tracks, but sometimes I like to work on my laptop WITHOUT all the external audio interface and external harddrive connected to my laptop.

Cubase dosent run very well without ASIO support, so I wonder what all of you are using for grid-style drum pattern software?

It dosent need to be a fancy studio suite or anything, matter of fact, simple would be better in this situation...

I use FL Studio for percussion and rewire it to Cubase.. I'm not sure if it's a "grid" but those 1/16th pads work GREAT for percussion.. and FLs included FX work great for percussion..

Does battery come with a grid and playback mode? The last time I checked it was just a drum/sample machine that takes incoming MIDI.

check ETS from SonicBytes out.. i think it's what you are looking for..

Either FL or Reason are probably the better two options. Redrm works pretty well for percussion in Reason, although reason might be a bit pricey if you just want something to play with the percs.

Battery and all the other VST instruments won't be of any help to you because they require a host to run properly. If you want something simple with its own sequencer and export function, go with Fruity Loops. You can always hook fruity up as a VSTi in Cubase later on if you want to keep everything in midi.
