Hi everyone,
Actually I wanted to record songs from my vinyl to my MD, but when I am doing so, there is hell alot of static, not those that you can put up with. Anyways, can any kind soul out there whoc an tell me how to do so? Maybe I did it the wrong way or something?

if you're hookin up turntable directly to MD, you should make sure the turntable ground gets connected to a ground to avoid noise. If you have a mixer, hook up your mixer output to MD

Well, when i record to MD from vinyl, i go through the record out on my mixer. If you dont have a mixer then you will have to the run the signal from the turntable through some kind of amplified source and then into you MD so you get a signal strength strong enough for your MD to record. Also, once you get that straightened out, dont forget to adjust the record level on your MD recorder so that you dont peak over 0 dB.The record level is very important! you dont want a signal too weak, and peaking over 0 dB will make the music very distorted. Thanks very much pal! Anyways, my turntable is hooked up to a amplifier and from the amplifier, I hooked up the left and right RCA cables to the [MD OUT - REC] which in turn goes to my MD. I tried adjusting the record volume too but it just doesn't seem to work... Will be waiting for your reply! Thanks in advance!

i usually just record from the record out from the mixer and usually comes out fine

i had your problem also, when i pluuged my turntables directly into the amplifier it got heaps of distortion and static, so i ran the cable outta my mixer and into my computer, from there into the amplifier, the sound is so clear now, or clearer, so yea run the output through your computer.....

Well, i dont know what MD recorder you are using, but look through your instruction manual where it talks about adjusting the recording level. With most MD recorders the way it works is you start playing the source(i.e. the turntable) and while its playing you can adjust the record level to the right amount on the MD recorder. After that you then restart the record and record what you want to record. Well, thats pretty much all i know so good luck.

Make sure that the input you have connected the table to on the amplifier is a PHONO input. If it doesn't say phono on it, chances are it won't have a ground plug either. Since it has an MD-out, this suggests to me that it is a very recent amp and as such might not have a phono input at all.
If this is the case, you definitely need to get your hands on either a mixer, and use the REC-OUT to connect to your mixer, or find an older amp from somewhere that does have a phono input. Since this is an older amp, it won't have an MD-out, but you can just connect your RCA's to the tape-out instead and this will do the same job.

But above all, make sure the table gets plugged into a phono input! It simply won't work properly at all if you don't do this!

Thanks for ur help pal. Actually I bought the amp and the turntable for around 3 months already. I do know abt the phono thing coz prior to this amp, I got an older one which incidentally, did not have a phono. Now the present one has it. Very positive abt tat. But still can't get iot going. Dunno wat is wrong?

Try recording to the MD from another source, like a CD. If you still get distortion here, then there could be a problem with either your amp or your cable to your MD. Also, check the recording level on your MD. Digital distortion is horrible, much worse than analog. If the level is too high then this could be the problem.

Do you get any of this distortion when just playing a vinyl through the amp? If so, try using a different amp, or connect up a mixer from somewhere and listen through the headphones. If you still get distortion then the most likely problem is your stylus.
