Derek Jeter

I was looking at the payroll stats earlier and was wondering if someone could please explain why this guy is the 4th highest paid in mlb considering his numbers are nowhere near the likes of Ramirez,Bonds etc.In fact hitting less than 25 hr and around 75 rbi's his numbers are almost half those of the big boys, worth 18.6 million,i dont think so.

Derek Jeter is more than just numbers. He is the captain of the ball club and is irreplaceable. (This coming from someone who loathes the Yankee's mind you)

So he's more of a figurehead then? Or does team captain do a lot then, cos i figured it would be Joe Torre doing all the motivating etc etc

He's definitely the motivator, because he leads by example. He plays hard every day, and is arguably the best defensive shortshop in the league. Not to mention he's a lifetime .315 hitter. RBI's and HR's aren't the only thing to base a players worth on.

He also brings about 15$ million dollars in outside revenue to the Yankees. In terms of ticket sales, merchandise, etc... no other position player brings more money to his team than Jeter. Well, scratch that... Bonds. But other than him...

Exactly. That's the best comparison to make. He's not a great defensive SS, he's a decent offensive player, but it's really all the intangibles and marketing he brings that granted him that 18 million a year contract.

I don't know how many times I've saw clips of him couming out the stands with a bloody face just to catch a foul ball!

I hate that play. If that were someone like Orlando Cabrera or Caesar Izturis, it would have been a much more routine play. Not many SS would have had to fall into the stands to make that play, and that is the only part that made that an exceptional play.

It's funny how things like that on defense are overlooked. Mike Cameron is one of the top defensive CFs in all of baseball. However, he is SO good, that all of his catches look routine. He rarely has to dive for a ball, which makes him much less flashy than Andruw Jones, but he is almost equal in terms of defense. So next time you see an amazing defensive play by an average defender, remember that there a few guys out there that would've made that play look routine.

I think Bobby Crosby at the A's has potential to be a great SS in the future.
