tw1tch, I try a couple of different ways.
1) Listen to live sets. I try & listen for something that catches my ear. Then try & track it down.
2) d/ling tracks from places like TA etc. Have a listen to them, then decide about them.
3) Artist, I'll try & have a listen to some tracks, purely based on the artist & past experience, I'll do this with: Rank 1, Dumonde, Goureyella, Tiesto.
4) Similarly label, I'll try & listen to certain vinyl (at stores or d/l) based on the label & again previous experience eg: anything on Xtravaganza
5) Vinyl stores. Some of the stores I'll ask to listen to some vinyl off the shelves & point out which ones I want OR if the assistant is fairly knowledgable then I'll ask to be given any trance / progressive styles. I've tried to get friendly with most of the vinyl store owners, because then you have a better chance of getting records that they may not put on the sheldf, because they don't have enough. Then certain vinyl come out from the back rooms.
6) Lastly, in a few of the vinyl stores I've been to in South Africa, the guys are really friendly. So if one customer listens to a track & thinks it's incredible he'll often pass his headphones onto other customers to listen or the store will put it over the main speakers for everyone to hear.
I keep a .txt file on my PC where I keep a list of what tracks I am looking for as well as any specific remixes.
