Cheney Relationship w/ Gay Marriage Bill

So rumor has it Bush might be attempting to put the Gay Marriage bill through again, as many of us have heard. The two main reasons he will probably do it: 1) Gain support of Republicans to show he is making an effort towards making it illegal. 2) He wants to.

What I don't understand, is the fact that Dick Cheney's daughter is a lesbian. Now, I consider myself a democrat, so I personally wouldn't like for this bill to pass. I believe it's up to the individual to chose what they do with their life, it's supposed to be a "free" country, but it seems to be getting less and less of one.

How could the President of the United States pass a bill against Gay Marriage, when teh fuckin' Vice President has a lesbian daughter? How the fuck does that work?

Couple things to note-

1. Bush has voiced his opposition to gay marriages, but has also voiced his agreeance with same sex civil unions. Provided that the same rights and benefits are given to same sex civil unions as with gay marriages, for the most part the gay community probably won't get too riled up on it.

2. Bush may very well try and get this through Congress again, and his motivations may very well be because he feels he owes something to the Christian Right. But keep in mind the following:

a) It has a snowball's chance in hell of passing. It was a fairly unpopular bill, esp. in the Senate, and those extra seat pick-ups by the Repubs. won't make any difference whatsoever. This will go nowhere in Congress, and I believe Bush knows that. Nevertheless, it is a useful tool in wedging Congressmen, which of course Bush and the Christian Right know this too.

b) The majority of voters are against gay marriage, but are also against a federal amendment banning it as well. Even the exit polls after this election state as much.

3. Don't think for a second that Mary Cheney is part of this equation in any way. Keep in mind that she was a major part of the Bush/Cheney campaign. Most folks in the gay community consider her a "sell-out", which is in lockstep with a number of closet homosexuals on the far Right who've slowly been "outed" throughout this election year cycle. IOW, her stance is with the Republican party first. Her being openly gay and a gay activist is a far distant second.

How can her priorities be Republican part first, lifestyle second? They are two completley different things. What kind of person just says, I want to be part of this party, so I wont live in the lifestyle I believe in?

It seems a bit fishy to me, regardless, thanks Opus.

BTW, That movie has been on A LOT here on the movie channels. Excellent movie.

EDIT : It would be like me joining the soccer team, but I hate soccer players and soccer games. She joins the Republican party, yet they are against Gay Marriage.

That's the $64,000 question on most far-right Conservative homosexuals. Granted, they are few and far between, but they're there, and as I pointed out, some simply try to keep their sexual preference anonymous. No matter.

I suppose I can understand where they are in line with nearly all issues of today's far-right Conservativism, but I also fail to understand how such a core value and belief can be suppressed in order to be in lockstep with the rest.

Who knows.

Was it any wonder why the log cabin Republicans couldn't endorse Bush this time around?

Isnt it possible Bush is just using this as a tool to keep attention off other issues?

I guess it depends on your point of view. To be perfectly honest, folks, I really don't give a flying fuck about this issue. I have personally never based fewer of my personal decisions on what gays are doing with eachother than I am right now. Unless, of course, it was some of that hot girl-on-girl shit I saw on Skinemax. But really, even then...I mean seriously. Who gives a shit? Just give them the "Civil Union" option with all of the same tax benefits, etc., of a "marriage" and let everyone be happy. Let it be left that "marriage" is ultimately a religious issue as defined by just about every religion in the world's creation story, and let it go. People gotta live how they wanna live, until it infringes on someone else's rights. Fuck, I am so goddamned tired of this topic. I know more gay people that are sick of hearing about this than I am. They want it to go away. Why must we be subjected to this? Why, oh merciless friends?
