VSTi effects of hardware synths?

the search is bugging out again. ill delete this thread if the search returns and i find an answer to this question.

in fl studio i get the sound of my virus through the MIDI out. the MIDI player in floops doesnt have a mixer channel and there seems to be no way of assigning the MIDI out a mixer channel. additionally, in the mixer window of a track consisting of nothing but a virus MIDI out, none of the dB meters are active, indicating that no sound source is running through the floops mixer. so is it even possible to run VSTi effects on the virus? i would really like to take parametric EQs to it and just shape the sound a little more on the floops mixer. any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have to record the sound you want from your hardware to a .wav file and then add FX

You seem to be a little confused about what MIDI is and does. No actual audio signal is passed through MIDI. It's basically only control data that tells a sound source what to do. Therefore, you will never be able to apply VST fx to an external MIDI sound source without first recording the audio output from that source into your computer. Can you even do this in FL?

yep. i am. complete midi virgin - ive only had a hardware synth for 2 days and well...its very different from using VSTis (which im used to).

i cant even record though. i tried to render it several times by exporting a project as a wav but it never worked. i have my soundcard sending MIDI data to the virus from the midi out on my delta 1010 to the midi in on the virus. i then i have the left and right TRS outputs of the virus hooked up to the 1st and 2nd input of my delta. so this means my soundcard is telling the virus to trigger blah blah blah note at so and so filter cutoff, resonance etc etc and the virus plays the sound which is sent back into the soundcard. i think this is the correct way to hook it up. but if its wrong if anyone could spot the mistake and correct it, that would be very helpful

sounds about right (but what do you mean by "TRS" outputs?). what are you using to record? you can't just have it set up like that and hit render - you have to actually record the wav data into your software first and then render it once the audio information is there. Once you've got a wav file in your software, that's when you apply the VST effects to it. I've never used FruityLoops, so i'm afraid i can't help you when it comes to specifics - i don't even know if FL can actually do what you're trying to do but i would hope so (enough people seem to give it praise and swear up and down that you can do anything in it that you can do in other studio packages).

You can apply effects to any external audio input.

Just select an fx channel, and at the bottom, where it says ''In'', select the audio input you have you synth connected to.

and there you go

But you will have to record the sound, and add it in as a wave file before you render the song.

yea i just discovered that just now boshed up the notes for 'for an angel,' set up a pluck preset on the virus, and figured out a way to assign it an FX channel then just recorded it in the mixer. cheers for the help anyway. floops never lets me down. although i had my doubts for a second there

incidentally, as soon as i got the virus to appear on the mixer i could whack VSTi effects on it in realtime. i just put a SIR lexicon reverb on the virus while it was playing back and it sounded lush. mwahahah

this wont record automation will it? the normal record feature next to the play button up top in fruity doesnt work for this purpose. even though the virus is sending MIDI data back into the MIDI in on the soundcard. the MIDI in light even lights up when i, for example sweep the filter rotary. it doesnt record the automation though. i take it recording the sound from the virus using the method described above will record all the automation as well? thanks for the help peeps, its been much appreciated.

EDIT: answering my own question. yep it records automation on the virus too. sigh. i guess its gonna be another night without sleep...
