Invisible Grin Traktor Setups?

I've been having a look at Traktor for some time now and it seems like its pretty much the best thing on the market for mixing straight from your computer. I see theres actually a competition on the go here on the forums for those who use it which will interest me greatly when/if we get to hear the results.

There is obviously a lot of get to grips with when using such powerful software and I'm just curious to know the kind of setups people have going. I'm currently running the following system:

  • Athlon64 3000+
  • 1GB DDR PC400
  • Creative Audigy 2 ZS

I also have an onboard NForce Audio Controller. I've experimented with programs such as Virtual DJ which allows you to have two soundcards setup with different outputs and that works ok to a degree but I don't think the software is near enough as good/stable as Traktor and I never feel when mixing that the output produced by both soundcards is working well together, something doesnt sound quite right.

So fair enough, I always thought Traktor lacked greatly as it couldnt allow the 2 soundcard setups but I guess I see why now. I've only just discovered you can cue up using one soundcard through the speakers and through the way Traktor exports stuff you get a clear mix as the final result. Great stuff. I also know now that since I have 5.1 surround outputs I could hook up headphones to one instead of say my rear speakers and be able to do live mixing, even better.

I basically am interested in learning more about the program. What kind of hardware do people have hooked up to it? Do you have mixers and what not plugged up to it and where can I find more information about this? Pictures would be great and prices/sites for such equipment just as good. Are some people just using the mouse/keyboard combo to work the program? How successful are you? Do you have any reccomended keyboard layouts?

Interested to hear from you all. It's interesting to explore this kind of stuff and we all have to start somewhere I guess. Every now and again I write a CD for me and my mates to listen to, it would be nice if I could mix one up instead of having the full length tracks Cheers!

Just press that little sync button on traktor... then fool around with it when you make it come in to make it perfect on beat

I'm familiar with how to use Traktor.

I'm interested in hardware setups people have to make use of all its features.

I'm thinking of buying a apple powerbook to use with traktor, and then some external soundcard. I think thats as good as a setup with traktor can get..

Or TraktorFS, that is really the best hardware interface

My understanding is that the best hardware to use is the Evolution X-Session midi-controler with a 2 chanel sound card....

first off, using seperate soundcards, especially if they are using different drivers (and most consumer sound cards will only allow one in the system at a time), you'll run into latency issues.

soundcard a's driver may be slower or faster than soundcard b and thus the two tracks will be slightly out of sync compared to what the traktor/other-DJ-app expects to be coming out the speaker.

I use a M-Audio Delta66. it's a 4in, 4out soundboard with external breakout box. Channels 1 and 2 are the first deck, 3 and 4 are the second deck (inside traktor)

both are connected to the line ins of the mixer.. so I just switch from phono to line on the mixer if I want to use traktor instead of a turntable.

all cue monitoring is done thru the usual controls on the mixer just like if I was cueing a record. I use hotkeys and a 20-key USB keypad to control most common functions... and the mouse a bit.

traktor can also interface with MIDI controllers, so you could build a MIDI pad to control pitch, nudge tracks, etc etc... since MIDI functions are completly mappable inside the application, its all up to you to decide how far you want to take it.

I don't see why you couldnt build something that looks like a mixer, but only has a MIDI out... if I only had the time!

I've been using it for a while with my mixer, but, maybe it's just me, but it seems that even when I line up the bpms at exactly the same, the beats seem to drift after a few seconds. Quite annoying. Hopefully I'll be upgrading to TT's soon.

I was referring to Virtual DJ. Not Traktor. For Traktor I am cueing out of the rear output of my soundcards and playing through the speakers on the front output.

Audigy - I have the same issue and I don't understand it either. People keep going on about beatgrids but I find they make things even worse. If anyone can offer a guide on how to beatmatch perfectly in the program then that would be much appreciated!
