When cheese becomes a derogetory term is when it's used to describe light-hearted music that, for some bizarre reason, thinks it's actually being serious. Aside from the poppier forms of trance (DJ Sammy, et al.), a lot of trance with peppy melodies suffer from this self-delusion that it is legitimate contendors (like one of those "epic" war movies thinking it has a serious chance at an Oscar -of which there were many last year). Who do they think they're kidding, though? When we look back on it years from now, a large portion of vocal trance with sputtering supersaw builds will be enjoyed with irony much the same way a lot of italo and euro does to this day, when it is no longer being produced at such vast quantities and it realizes how it should have been presenting itself all along.

Until that time comes, however, it will be lambasted for as long as it thinks it's serious music.

i hate the term cheese with a passion. I think it's unfare to classify any form of music one way or another, there will always be SOMEONE out there intelligent or not that likes it. And GOOD! it creates a vast musical diversity that spawns new sounds and influences new people. If there hadent been that one crappy track 10 years ago that some great DJ liked, maybe they wouldn't have tried to create something similar. perhaps if the track was labled cheese, and denounced by their peers, they would have been less inclined to become a dj. Sorry i don't want to get into a is trance bad or not discussion again, that's just my opinion about the term cheese, and why i dont like it

I wrote this in 2002. I don't nessecarily agree with it all nowadays, but it should give you an idea:

what about atb's new album? It doesn't sound like andre was solely trying to commercialize and make $$$. the drum rolls and melody although catchy doesnt seem cheap or single layered, it doesnt seem to have the same feeling as dj sammy heaven or what not. and still his music is classified as cheese.

i thought his previous albums werent bad either. til i come, don't stop were good tracks. fields of love was good too. cant remember anymore for now.

They were good. Light hearted, peppy, cheesy even at times, but good for what they were.

It's a shame some folk thought ATB's work is something bigger than that but, hey, I once thought 2 Unlimited was more than what they actually were as well. We were all young once.
