I don't go to clubs to look at the DJ.

When a DJ is calm I think the set is better. More concentration.
Though, I don't have a problem with djs that jump around or throw their hand into the air.

I think it depends on the style you play, and what type of crowd you are playing for.
Some people like to just dance and enjoy the music, while others like to jump around and scream like crazy monkeys. Sort of like this: .
I can't imagine a prog-house dj jumping around like crazy, i think a more laid-back and calm dj would be better. But when playing a bangin' techno set, standing around like you're dead won't really add to the music and atmosphere.

When I play, I need to be active in some way. Not
jumping up and down like a mad man, yet, not standing
there like a zombie.

imo it's highly dependable on certain key factors. for one, the vibes n energy u get from the crowd. I think its a two-way thing.
I start groovin' naturally when the crowd 'lifts' me. my music 'lifts' the crowd, and the crowd in turn 'lifts' me.
the music is an important factor here as a crowd ain't gonna go mental looking at a dj jumping like a chimpanzee when the music the chimp is playing sucks balls.
neway to answer your simple question and not stray from the topic, i do a little of both. neither to extreme.

I bounce around a lot, jump, shimmy around, really get into it.
And thats just in my bedroom
From a clubbers point of view, I like to see the DJ getting into it, even if its just bouncing around a bit and smiling at the crowd

I prefer DJs that go with you bounch around and so on, it makes a connection.
When I play on decks I can be quite calm but when it starts going good, ace tunes, ace mixing, everything going right then I can help but start bobbing like compton crack whore.

I play with a lot of energy. After all, if the DJ isn't getting into it, why should the crowd?
There are too many DJs out there who just keep their head down, doing that thing they practised in their bedroom, never acknowledging the crowd. Ultimately the DJ is an entertainer and while the music should always do the talking, it never hurts to show a bit of enthusiasm.
