you can get pretty creative if you use loops ase basic material for editing the hell out of. Indeed get rid of the claps, shuffle stuff around, and put it somewhere in the background of your percussion track alongside your custom (built from one shots) drum track.
For me a nice pointer is, if you take the orig loop, and you take your track, and you can't really tell that loop is in the track, you did fine It can certainly add flow!
I'm against stacking up unedited loops to build an entire percussion track. Sure it may sound nice, but that's an accomplishment of the sample CD creator.
