i'm not a very good drum programmer, so loops definately come in handy, but it feels a bit like cheating, having bass drums, hi hats, bongos, etc. all perfectly mapped out when using samples. my ideas are still original though, and i try to keep some elements fresh in my drums...but do you guys think its cheating?

I used to think it was cheating...now I just feel that it's not fulfilling to use loops when I can make my own...I like everything to come from me. But people use them because it's such a time saver, you know. =o)

i sometimes use loops, but i like to chop them up and turn them into something different.. i always play around with them, i'd never insert a loop into a track of mine without altering it.

TOR, good point, using something like intakt to break up parts of a sample can work well too.

project7...i wouldn't say they sound gay...have you heard the stuff from ueberschall? there loop essentials disk is amazing, and realistically, when you listen to your typical trance song, most of them have a typical drum pattern anyways, theres not loads of originality in that category. thats why it doesn't feel like cheating to bad, since more or less most producers sound the same anyways.

I don't use them because of that...I know a lot of people want to save time and pain by using them. I want everything to be original from me. That's why a lot of the tracks posted in the Amateur Producers section are so refreshing and different...you can tell they did their homoework in the percussion department. =o)

i didnt use loops either, but lets face it.. everybody does, and i am thinking about the pros.. when u get a bunch of loops they can be easily recognised in older and newer tunes..

once u start using loops ull realise how many that actually does...

but again, actually getting good loops can be a freeking pain in the arse.. loops with KICK or CLAP in it is basically useless.. and most loops does have that.. its really annoying..

I read an interview with John00 Flemming and he said that he even uses loops but chops out the kicks and replaces them with his own. I haven't used loops in ages and so think they sound really shitty...me thinks they're straight off the 909.

you can get pretty creative if you use loops ase basic material for editing the hell out of. Indeed get rid of the claps, shuffle stuff around, and put it somewhere in the background of your percussion track alongside your custom (built from one shots) drum track.

For me a nice pointer is, if you take the orig loop, and you take your track, and you can't really tell that loop is in the track, you did fine It can certainly add flow!


I'm against stacking up unedited loops to build an entire percussion track. Sure it may sound nice, but that's an accomplishment of the sample CD creator.

I use loops as inspiration for my own beats, and sometimes layer them together.

I'm up in arms as to whether using loops is actually cheating, but there are definitely cases when they can be overused.

I use loops, unedited or otherwise, and I really don't mind.
