You are correct. A monitor is speaker used just for the booth. Since the other speakers are much louder, and facing away from the booth, the DJ can listen in on the mix before it actually drops in.

There the speakers for the dj. So that he can hear an output for what the main system sounds like.

monitors won't be as loud but will tend to be more accurate. Pa's are usually very big and very loud to push out a lot of sound. i would suggest monitors for home dj use.

I agree with that, I just got a set of PA speakers and they need to be loud to sound best, which creates problems in the typical house or apartment. If you are close to neighbours it's best to use PA speaker down in a nice big basement.

Although you can tweak the EQs on PA speakers to improve the sound at low volume, they just won't sound that good especially at short distances.

Can anyone suggest good (but somehow inexpensive) monitors with stands? I dont want them to have a built in amp, since I already own one good.
I'm thankful for any advices

Yeah i own some some PAs and last summer I was playing a bit too loud with the windows open and the neighbors could hear and complained and my parents complain all the time about them being too loud. I am a little confused though...would some monitors like M-Audio BX8 or BX5 be fine for DJing? I've been told that studio monitors are flat...without much bass, but I've heard people using BX8s for monitoring with no problem (cept having a subwoofer with the BX5 is recommended, I guess with the BX8s you could get away with out it...)
