Th Ba' is an game traditionally played by Orcadian men on Chritmas and New Year's Day in Kirkwall, Orkney. It's like rugby - without rules. Your team ('Uppie' or 'Doonie') is ascertained by what route you travelled by the very first time travelled to Kirkwall (Orkney's capital), and there are usually around 200 players.
If you are a 'Doonie', the goal is to chuck the ba' in Kirkwall basin. If you are an 'Uppie', then the goal is to run the ba' round Mackison's corner. Games typically last around 3 hours, and the prize is to take the trophy is the ba' itself, for the man of the match to keep.
Sadly, I've never competed - there used to be a female ba' but it was cancelled due to the the catfights.
