Evil1 Have you ever?

Ever been to a house party where the djs mixing was so crap that it was killing you to the point where you asked him if he wanted a break and if you could take over??
Just last night at yet another house partie where the dj did not even know what beatmatching meant i came so very close to walking up and asking to take over because he atleast seemed to have half decent tunes.
Its like that beatmatching fobia thing without the things even playing together! although he did try beatmatch a few songs but it was asif their was 100 horses running our way!

I just had to sorta vent my anger, although im sure that many TAs have sufferd to the likes of the crapy house party dj!

edit:

and it boggles my mind, why buy 2 turntables and a mixer when you can just quickly switch songs?

Lol... I think just about every DJ in the world has had this happen to them...

Just ask him if he wants to tag the set for a bit and own him...

Another thing simular bugged me today. There was this teen and his crazy dad who wanted us to build him a pc. The teen wanted to use the computer for "deejaying" and his dad wanted it for the usual. (pr0n, email, etc) The kid asked me what programs i suggest for djs. I said three words, Serato Scratch Live. He looked at me funny and asked what's that. I told him it's an interface for using digital files on turntables and cd decks. He looked really confused. So then i asked him what type of music he wants to spin. He said, "i want to make music and beats."

Ugh, i really wished i was around to spin in the mid 80s where hip-hop and turntablism was at it's height. That's the time where everything was underground and creative. Now people don't even know what djs do and everybody's a dj or want's to be a dj. This both pisses me off and encourages me. I really get pissed off at people doing this just to be cool as if it's a status symbol of modern Americana capitalism. But, at the same time, it inspires me to look at things in a different perspective and to try to play around with sounds and samples just to make stuff sound cool. Not carbon copy 2hr sets, but sounds that sound different and cool to me. To be honest, i wouldn't be into this dj stuff if i haven't met my old neighbor. In the late 90s when this was on the rise in the mainstream, he showed me things i can do with turntables that were unimaginable to me. He use to battle all of the time since the early 80s and his skills were a great influence on me. He was the guy that always gave me sound advice and inspiration. That's what got me into this.

Im not ignorant. I've actually gave the guy some info, and my contact info if he wants to check out partys and such. I just find it very depressing to find people jump into the dj bandwaggon without any clue what it's about. DJs are everywhere in the mass media and it's both a blessing and burdon at the same time. For example, turntables outsell guitars yearly, tv ads have djs in them now, and i've seen many music videos with the dj in them just being there for background and have no input into the band. I'm not dogging the teen for wanting to get into spinning. I'm just frustrated into the fact that tv has made djs nothing more than a popular status symbol instead of a artist that does things behind those decks instead of just looking pretty.

that's my $.02

agreed 10000000000%

i personally cant say i'm a dj. i've never played live nor do i even own a decent setup. I'm as much a dj as that kid, difference being i understand the fundamentals, and i understand what djing is about. i'm not doing it to get pussy and look cool. i do it for the music and cause i find overall enjoyment in mixing music and the art, per se, of DJing. I wish more people would do what i do. when you get an interest in something, research it instead of jumping out into the world assuming you know what you're talking about, that kid being a prime example.

its cool you gave that kid some adive and whatnot though. i've tried to explain to my friends and other people how it all works and some of them are like... thats it? ghey! or they get confused about 7 seconds into the explanation and just move onto the next subject.

/meaningless rant
