Darker notes

When making your riff ,melody ,or arp

what are the main chords and scales that give you a more darker, harder style trance feel opposed to the happy trance.

ive heard f -minor would give a darker feel but im sure there are more which some of you guys use.

It's got nothing to do with the key and everything to do with the chord progression.

In any situation, if you want your riff sounding darker then all you have to do is try flattening notes ( shift them down a semitone ). The more flattened notes the darker the sound.

Chord Progressions

i-VI (ie, C minor to A major) is a pretty dark progression

As diginut said, it has nothing to do with the key.

However, diminished minor chords tend to give a much darker sound than natural minor chords. Natural minor chords give a more "sad" minor while "diminished" minor chords give a more "dark" minor chord.

In case you don't know what a diminished minor chord is, it is the exact same as a minor chord except the V (fifth note) is one semitone lower.
