Let’s look at this as if it were a poem (hey! It’s the title of the album):

quote:
Delerium - Silence
featuring Sarah McLachlan

One of the best songs ever. As always, Great voice by Sarah.

Definition of silence (just for completion purposes):
-The condition or quality of being or keeping still and silent.
-The absence of sound; stillness.
-A period of time without speech or noise.
-Refusal or failure to speak out.

quote:
Give me release
Witness me
I am outside
Give me peace

In these four lines the listener identifies a person who yearns for peace. These words are nothing but lamentation. This person, no sex specified (although the fact the Sarah sings it may lead some to believe that it’s about a woman) is in a quest to find silence, calmness. “I am outside” can be interpreted in many ways. It could mean that she is in fact outside and visible to others around, but the next line “Give me peace” makes the idea hard to believe. Now, if a person is outside of the self, it could mean that the person has no control because of some reasons not yet known to the listener.

Another thing to be thinking about is who is this person talking to? Could it be a loved one? A puppy? Me?

quote:
Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe
That I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

This is just beautiful poetry. The person, or poet, was hoping to “get caught up” in heaven with its “sense of wonder”. But this was going to happen when the rage inside subsided. Did it actually happen? It should be noted that the person was only wishing to get caught up to forget about the rage and find silence. Heaven represents silence.

quote:
Passion chokes the flower
Until she cries no more
Possessing all the beauty
Hungry still for more

This is a personification. And this might be where one could say that the poet is a woman. Flowers represent beauty (women) and most of us men face it proudly: we’re ugly. But passion drains the flower empty of its beauty leaving it dead. In reality people would not care to look for a flower that is no longer beautiful. In fact, few people take time to notice the flowers. Sad.

quote:
Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe
That I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

Repeated. More emphasis.

quote:
In this white wave I am sinking in this silence[quote]
It is here where the listener learns that the poet is in a “white wave”. Could this white wave be a mass march of clouds?

[quote]In this white wave
In this silence
I believe

The poet starts to sound optimistic. There is a change in tone. The poet is more optimistic and happy. She believes! There is silence in the “white wave”.

quote:
I can't help longing
Comfort me
I can't hold it all in
If you won't let me

Holy Deleriumonic ghosts! Poet returns to the starting tone. Perhaps the rage inside is too much and can’t seem to control it. It might happen. She needs comfort.

quote:
Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe
That I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

Heaven is the answer.

quote:
In this white wave I am sinking in this silence
In this white wave
In this silence
I believe

Hope returns towards the end. Rage will not dominate the poet. She’s too strong.

quote:
I have seen you
In this white wave
you are silent
You are breathing in this white wave... I am free

Now, “I have seen you” will make the listener think that the poet has found what she was looking for. That of course is silence, right? That’s a big no because in the next lines we read “you are silent”. Who is silent? Is the silence silent? That would not make sense. I mean, the silence is in fact silent but it isn’t necessary to point that out. No redundancy.

In addition, “you are breathing in this white wave” would mean that the poet is speaking to a special someone (maybe me?)

Let’s try to make some sense of this. The poet is in the white wave. Here she finds silence. But notice that she didn’t feel happy ‘til the end of time, I mean, until the end of the song. She wasn’t happy when she first found the silence in which she was sinking. It wasn’t until she found the “you” that she was “free”.

But why silence? The dead are silent. It could be that this is in fact the celebration of a passing away of a “flower” that in the “breathing” of a “white wave” felt free. Picture a dry flower falling to the ground and remaining there where the rest of the young beautiful flowers take away all the sunlight and look down at her. This agonizing flower only has time to ask for silence. Her beauty is gone. She needs peace.

It’s not about a flower though. Flowers become screens to reflect the feelings of people. So it’s about the poet finding the silence she was looking for. The romantic side of me, which is quite big I should add, would say that the poet was looking for silence because she knew there, in the white wave, she was going to find the right one (me). It’s a love story if you care to look at it that way. After all, silence is when you & i (the couple) feel completely at peace. Using another tune:

"the most perfect silence is
when there is no need to speak
the most perfect silence is
when there's no need to explain."

It is when you're truly silent when you feel comfortable and connected with your partner. But anger has to be put aside because it keeps us from embodying the true beauty in the loved one. This beauty is sometimes ignored because passion is given more attention and thus kills the "flower". It's a prophecy: enjoy the true love in silence as if you were underwater and the only thing that could keep you alive is an eternal kiss from your loved one. Don't let go and continue living inside the white wave.

Not satisfied? Well, it could just be that the poet felt the need for silence because she had had accumulated too much anger because of someone that hurt her and needed to feel free.

The best interpretation is the one you make. Don’t let others explain it to you.

Not really. But anything by Delerium or Conjure One requires true dedication. No regret in spending time writing something about them.

Nice very nice indeed, but i think its sadder than that, imo she wants the ultimate release, the ultimate silence, she wants to die.

Yeah, I was thinking that too.

I think the 'person' she's addressing in the couple instances of 'you' isn't anyone in particular, but the 'other' of people, the world, in general.

Delerium is Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber's (aka Frontline Assembly) ambient/New Age side project that they've been noodling around with at least since the 80s. If I remember the story correctly, the song originally had no vocals. They wanted vocals, but no words--really just chanting or filler type stuff like what Enigma does. They got Sarah Mclachlan to hollar some stuff in the studio, and when that didn't work she decided to just make something up on the spot. So the song really doesn't mean anything. She's just waxing poeting, freeflowing some pretty words together to give the song vocal instrumentation. Sarah's good at stuff like that. She probably came up with the hook while sitting on the can.

The song was on the CD Karma, released in 97. It had mediocre exposure and review. It's Chris Fortier's Sanctuary remix of it 2 years later that got everyone's attention, and then Sasha & Digweed put it on Northern Exposure, and that sealed the deal. The original is really quite nice. All remixes have been mediocre or shite.
