Try to think of techno and trance as two sides of the same spectrum. They sound similar, have similar structures, similar speeds, similar instruments and similar effects, but trance focuses more on emotion and melody, while techno is colder, more neutral, generally more abstract, and focuses more on energy and flow instead. There's a blurry line in the middle, and stuff that borrows elements from both could be called tech-trance. Both genres also have a few sets of keys generally associated with them.
