Dancing Dude Is this a good idea for the future

im currently a sophmore in high school and ive been listenin to trance for like.2 years. i really want to be a DJ.. i think i have pretty good music talent.. like ive been playin guitar since 4th grade. Lately ive begun to play less often tho.. cuz of trance and everythin. but i played good stuff like spanish guitar. i have a friend who Dj's parties and ive gone with him 2 times. hes pretty good and i realyl want to be a DJ also.. this one teacher i had said that for a career i should do somethin i like and i want to be a DJ. I was wonderin is it hard to succeed as a DJ and can anyoen give me tips? I know im pretty well cut out for it because i have a pretty good memory when it comes to songs.. like i can name a song when hearing only like 3 seconds of it.. and when i listen to a live set i can tell when the Dj is mixing in another song. Maybe after highschool i can get a job and get equipment then go to college and DJ during college.. i mean i dont want to not go to college. not only will my mom kill be but if Djin fails i need somethin to fall back on. Can anyone help me out? tell me what path to take .. maybe youve been there.

oh yeh and also ive got Virtual Turntables so i can learn how to crossfade. and i think im pretty good well think is the word

Well to be honest if u need to ask whether u should be a DJ then maybe its not for u. Cuz a DJ has to have upmost respect for their music and basically want to do it more than anything else. So if you want to be a DJ then do it. As for how hard it is to score jobs n stuff, its prob bout 80% on your contacts and 20% on your skill. Now im not saying that if u know the right people it doesnt matter how shit u are but u could be an awesome DJ and without the contacts neva get a gig. You say that u reckon you'd be pretty good at it but i dont think theres anyway of predicting how good u'll without trying it for yourself, and knowing when a DJ is goin from one song to the next means jack shit

I suggest u either try out on a mates set of decks if any of them have em or otherwise just go for it but as i said u shouldnt need to ask u should just do it.

Peace

dj'ing as a career? very unlikely... if you really want to, you should do it for a hobby, and don't expect anything more.. maybe a few house parties, but as a career? if it comes, you've hit the jackpot.

also remember, its pretty damn expensive... VERY expensive.. my bank account hurts...

^^^werd!!! my bank account hurts too. djing as a career is rough bro. go to college and find something else to do that you like. doesn't mean that you shouldn't dj though. you can still dj but it's very difficult to make it a career. lemme put it this way, if you earn enough money spinning to pay for your vinyls then you should consider yourself very privileged. it's not easy to make big money. and you should be in the trade because you love it and not because you can make bank. so hope this helps with any sort of decision you have to make. it is a big decision cuz of the monetary involvement so definitely play on a friend's decks before you buy your own if possible. good luck to you and let us know what you decide. cheers!

Tiesto started in a disco in Breda, the netherlands, and he selled mixtapes to get some money. If i were you i would chose an other career wich creates a lot of money, and do DJing as a hobby. You first need some skill, and if you're very lucky you may find a job as DJ. But if you check this whole forum, you see why that's so hard: there are so many guys/girls who want to be a DJ, that you have to be very good to get a job!! So if you want to DJ, i won't stop you, but DJing is more then just crossfading. And like the others said: it's EXPENSIVE.

go with this, it's exactly what i've been doing. i work for a small company and make decent enough money where I could have a couple hundred a month to spend on vinyl. I got into it because i've wanted to for the longest time - even just as a hobby and if nothing more than to make mix CDs for my friends (make great stocking stuffers )

its fun for me and i don't ever want to look at it as a chore where my next paycheck is depending on just this one thing (read: career)

i'll be lucky if i ever make $ from it and even if it just covers what i spend on music.
