Some Effect?

Is there an "effect" i'm missing out on?

Like in the Mike Foyle - Woot sample that was posted in the amateur music producers forum the percussion change every 4 measures.

Is that an effect or just total l33t skill?

I don't get it... you think most of us just loop a few bars of percussion across the whole track?

No, there's no effect that can magically make percussion interesting, you have to just write good percussion. You can use effects to make subtle changes, like time-synced flangers, phasers, filters, etc., but those aren't going to fool anyone if it's the same loop repeated a hundred times.

I know that Mike is a very talented producer and I imagine that he puts at least a reasonable amount of effort into his tracks. But maybe you should ask him?

I do indeed like Mikes tracks and I know he's a good producer & takes some time. One of my buddys brought this topic up and I thought I would ask around here.

It just sounds weird...but I love it at the same time. The percussion just changes every 4 measures.

I'll ask mike though

the perc sounds a little bit weird because it was sequenced in 6/8... that is, a full 6/8 shuffle but not limiting myself to the shuffle pattern but instead using as many of the possible grooves available to me when programming in 6/8 rather than 4/4. I don't know if thats what you mean. I also used bit crushers and distortion on some of the percussion parts to dirty it up a little bit. I hope that helps!

it was sequenced in 6/8. if the percussion was in 4/4 then i would have to have used 16th triplets which i did not. the fact that it hs 2 kicks in a bar is irrelevant. all i said was that i sequenced it in 6/8. the final product is in neither 6/8 or 4/4. its in 12/16 because there are 12 16th notes per bar (and 6 16th notes seperates each kick) and that is the most logical way of organising it. yes the kick divides the bar into 2 not 3, but the kick isnt the only part in the percussion, nor does it nessesarily define the time signature of a track simply because of its overpowering presence. its not quite that black and white.

load this midi file into an editor:
