So whats your routine in a record store. I've starting going to my local record stores recently. They're pretty awkward and mostly filled with wierd hippy style ravers who have an excessive adoration for hard breaks and drum n'bass... not that that's a bad thing.

Anyways, I find myself mostly flipping through the progressive/trance crate (a very small one) but have always been curious as to how people come across fresh tracks. I normally first flip through to see anything I'm familiar with and normally end up buying something I recognize. Yeah Im a noob, but I just don't know how to look for new fresh artists. I'll see some random names, but theres tons of them! How do you guys do it and choose. Are you patient and just play as many records as you can in X hours?

There's been something else thats bothering me recently too. It seems like their genre distinction is different from TAs/discogs. It seems like they just throw anything from the 'bigger' European style DJs into the trance/prog crate. I wanna start getting some house tracks, like Cattaneo/Masiello/Howells/Digweed style, but most tracks that these DJs play are dropped in the prog/trance crate. Is there something I'm missing here. It makes me wonder what they get for their House crates.

Inputs and comments about this would be appreciated.

if trance is released on vinyl it aint fresh cos its only big name labels releaseing stuff on vinyl now. and in general they stick to big name producers they know will sell.

I don't shop at record stores much, but when i do i check out the new prog, breaks, house and all releases first... if theres any i like i put them aside..

then the digging begins!

If im going to the store i allocate at least 2 or 3 hours..

And when digging, i just grab about odd records, separate from like, sorta like, dislike, from each pile, keep the likes and sorta likes in one stack beside me and return the dislikes.. then grab a new pile!

That's not really true, there are loads of smaller labels and white label series' putting things out at the moment. Remember that most promos/tp's still come out on vinyl and you hardly get any digital download promos, so even if they are from big labels and set to be big tunes, you can still get them early...

I agree this isn't really the case with hard dance but for trance and particularly prog there's definately still loads around.

I still buy loads of vinyl and don't seem to have too much trouble getting a mixture of tracks people know and tracks people don't.

But having said that I buy everything online now.

just keep crate diggin mate!

i always come across some great tunes by local producers around glasgow that sell white labels of theyr latest tunes to the record shops!

only advice i can give is listen to as much as you possibly can!
just dig through them and pick up as many as you can carry and listen to them, then sort them out into piles that you want to keep and those you dont! then go and get another big bunch of vinyl to listen to

also might be worth askin the staff what new shit theyv got!

I usually devote a few hours to it and look through EVERY RECORD THERE. Usually I start in teh trance section, then to prog, then goa then breaks... oh I love the record store

See, there are no record stores here that sell EDM. The two record stores here are 100% hip-hop.

you re right about the progressive side of things. there is a lot out there. i gotto admit that all my local store really concentrate on is the commercially viable stuff with regards to any trance. drum and bass is lending a helping hand in making trance obsolete where im from

I prefere mp3 sample digging though.

I rarely go record shopping anymore (it's all done on:line now), but when i did, I would just search thru the new releases on the wall.

Yeah I prefer mp3 digging because you can drink and smoke while you're doing it. It's faster too. It only took me a day to listen to every single breaks track on Beatport.
