Yes I know snare rolls sometimes sound like crap, but sometimes they fit well in a mix, I'm just curious how to make correct sounding one, that doesn;t sound like a whole bunch of snare drums with delay.

I don't use snare rolls alot, but proper compression and eq should be enough. Of course, a good sample is important too.

Also when applied well, the snare roll, it will sound great. Forgot what song, but and breakdowns, the snare roll dominated, and it sounded so great. I guess it really depends on your EQing and effects skills, so that leaves me out

Yes, a little reverb is good.
Something I forgot to mention is to experiment with the envelopes of the sampler (decay especially), a shorter decay will make the snare roll sound tighter.
Also, don't be afraid to use other effects like distortion, bitcrusher, filter, phaser. Be creative.

I personaly hate it when a snare fill is just a naked sample played at 1/16. A snare fill could easily be turned into almost a noise sweep sound which I prefer. I'm experimenting myself at the moment with a flanger on the snare fill. But then without LFOíng the frequency but automating the frequency down or up if you like. Also automating an EQ cutout frequency can work wonders and realy gives you a nice sweep.
Anyway, just go crazy on effects. I personaly realy love the 'Kjaerhus Classic' FX package.
Music is as universal to people as breathing. We've probably been at it since before we even started talking. Immaging two cavemen smashing away at a peace of flint to make a spearhead. It wouldn't take long for them to learn te synchronise the sound. And there you have it, the words first percussive band.
Music has survived wars, famines, the plague and many other things and has evolved with man across many cultures. Dance music is just the next step in the evolutionary chain. My guess is that it will probably be with us untill we are extinced.
