anybody organize their CD's like this?

I have about 200 CD's...each one full with about 10 songs on each. I decided to use Microsoft Excel to create a database that would be in alphabetical order by artist. Then, the database printout would also tell me the cd number that each track is on.

This helps me find tracks a lot quicker than just flipping through the cd wallet pages and reading a bunch of unorganized index cards.

Anybody else use this method of have an even better way of doing it?

Load every cd into one winamp playlist, hit Ctrl-Alt-G (with playlist window selected), and that should win you some typing time. There are other ways, I hope you haven't been typing your fingers numb.

I do it the same way you do, except I only load about 8 tracks per CD. I only do that so there is about 1/2" of unwritten data on the CD so I can safely pull it out of the case not as gently and not worry if that area gets scratched or scuffed. So far so good!

I also make doubles of each disc in case I need to mix two tracks from the same CD.

Have you tried Ctrl+F? I use this when searching large text files, hopefully it works with other text based files too. Ctrl + F and then type in whatever you're lookin for

So try clicking in the playlist window first (anywhere in that window); should work, I've known the function to be in there for as long as I remember.

When I used to burn about 10 tracks to a CD, I'd burn tracks for any given CD in alphabetical order then just keep the CDs in chronological order - i.e. just add the latest one to the end - with a printed tracklist...

Then all you need is a rough idea of how long ago you got the track and you can find it pretty quickly cos you know exactly where to look on the CD tracklists.

That way you don't have to re-print your list for every gig! It also means your most recent stuff (likely to be the stuff you play the most) is all in one place, although I suppose if you're adding CDs in the order you get the tunes then they'll be like that anyway

But now I only burn one tune to a CD (along with a set of samples & loops), or several if they're by the same artist and I get them at the same time.

Currently I burn 6-10 tracks per CD as I buy them, and I try to rougly group them by style/sound. I make a double of each so that I can mix tracks that are burned together. Then I make a little index card, and in big sharpie at the top, I write the sounds/styles of the music on that CD. That way, when I'm flipping through my CD book, I can instantly scan my music for the type of track I want, then scan the tracks individually.
