i got a question...
so last fall i went on a cross country road trip, popping up into canada
now pretty much everything up there made sense, except for one thing that i still don't understand. in vancouver (possibly other places, it was like 6 months ago so my memory's shaky) sometimes, but not all the times, green lights would flash on and off instead of being just solid green.
so there's my question. why flashing green lights?

Advance Green When Flashing
In Canada, the road sign "Advance Green When Flashing" at a intersection controlled by traffic lights means that the left turn is on a filter (i.e. the traffic in the opposite direction is stopped), that this occurs before traffic going straight on is released, and that the left turn traffic light will flash green during this time.


At least in Canada, this means that if you are making a left turn, you have the right-of-way over vehicles in the opposite direction. All of the newer traffic lights seem to have green arrows for this situation, but there's still a lot of old flashing ones.
