Constructive criticism

Hi, I've been looking at this site for a few weeks now, but this is my first post.
Always been a fan of trance but I'm getting into it a lot more now.
Last night I recorded a set, (the first time I've tried this), but my knowledge of track selection and mixing is limited to say the least, and this is more than likely reflected in my selection.

The tracks went like this in this order:

Nu NRG - Universe
Silver Blue - Step Back (A2 Vocal Mix)
Sash! - Adelante (Dumonde Remix)
ATB - Till I come
Motorcycle - As the rush comes (DJ Tiesto Remix)
Amara - Pulse
Armin Van Buuren - Serenity
Toby Emerson - Shockwave
Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Marco V Remix)
Marco V - Recovered
4 Strings - Diving (Cosmic Gate Remix)
Oceanlab - Sattelite (Original Above and Beyond Remix)
DJ Tiesto - Adagio for strings

Basically I'm asking you to criticize this as much as possible, but in a constructive way to see where I'm going wrong and to help me learn a bit more. Much help would be appreciated, cheers

Ok don't be mad but if you want to be a serious DJ i recommend that you at least name your mp3s correctly.

There is no Tiesto remix of ATRC.

oh dear

you need to learn how to structure a set; take the listener on a gradually incrementing journey through styles... it looks all over the place here, you go between hard trance, tech trance & uplifting trance seemingly randomly. you want to have slower stuff like motorcycle towards the start, then slowly work your way up through the uplifting stuff and then to the hard/techy stuff at the end

and having sash, atb, motorcycle, oceanlab, armin & tiesto all in one set just screams 'newbie'... try to be a bit more original with your artist/track selection

The boys speak the truth. Sure, it doesn't matter what tracks you use if you're gonna practice beatmatching and all the many techniques a DJ might wanna use, but when you've passed that stage, you'd wanna be able to construct a set too.

A. Discogs is your friend. Mislabeled MP3's will get you busted quick on here.

2. Buy (download?) some new tracks. Everything that you've listed on there was tired years ago - At this point that tracklist looks like what I would have expected from any generic Trance DJ a couple years back.

C. Record a set - Post it in the APPROPRIATE forum, then ask for criticism. It's easy to post a tracklist - But how does anyone know what your mixing sounds like?

4. Programming, but others have touched on that already.

As a tracklist that looks utterly abysmal m8, and if that's all I have to criticize, I'd say you've got some work to do.

There were a few of these threads a while back. I think either guys are just putting up tracks randomally and seeing what people think of them as their "set" or are too nervous to put up a set they made because it might be too poor and they might get flamed, or because of some of the tracks he put on there. Either way, you guys are right, you have to really hear the mix in order to judge if it's good or not. Ferry's mix in "Infinite Euphoria" looked really weird from the looks of it, but when I heard it, it actually was quite unique, so you really can't judge a set just by what someone puts up but I agree, this is all over the place and has no structure whatsoever..

You're putting a bunch of super-famous tracks together - what's the point? It's ok to have two or three of those at most but you gotta mix it up with some unknowns or at least semi-unknown tracks. and that doesn't mean throwing in random amateur stuff that was too bad to get signed to any decent labels, it just means you have to dig for your music, and how well you can do that is how you will be judged as a DJ.

again with the alphanumeric lists rob?

in any case, the 4th point is the only one of crucial importance as portrayed by the following two examples:

  • very good programming + shit mixing = a fun night out (unless you're an anal dj that gets sick to his stomach at any trainwreck)
  • shit programming + amazing mixing = Zzzzzzz or alternatively... 's all around
