First known use of the word

The first popular figures to use the word were Atlanta rappers Outkast, who in their 1993, song and accompanying video "Player's Ball" said, "I gots in crunk if it ain't real ain't right". Outkast also mentions "crunk" in the song "Hootie Hoo" that was released in 1994 on the same album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. The lyrics state "Follow the funk from the skunk/and the dank that is crunk in the Dungeon."

Misconception of word origin

Contrary to popular misconception, there is no evidence at all to suggest that crunk derives from krank (ill) in Yiddish or German. Similarly, there is no evidence to suggest that Jewish shopkeepers introduced the word to black communities in the southern United States.

Conan O'Brien

In 1993, Conan O'Brien used the term "krunk" (an apparently invented nonsense word) as a multipurpose expletive on his television program Late Night with Conan O'Brien. (In this sense, the word was very similar to "smeg" in the Red Dwarf universe.) The term was used throughout the first two seasons of the show as a replacement for the infamous "seven dirty words", with the explanation that it was the most profane expletive of all time. The running joke was that the word was so new, television censors wouldn't know about it, thus allowing a curse word to go out over the airwaves. O'Brien encouraged the guests on his show to insert the word into their conversations. The show exhibited video clips of various people using the word, including one of Ice T (notorious in his rap persona for his use of expletive-laced language) sitting in the show's guest chair saying, "Wow, that's krunked up, man." Viewers at home were also encouraged to use "krunk" in conversation, so as to bring the word into common use. According to Late Night writer Robert Smigel, the word was invented by fellow writer Dino Stamatopoulos.

The exact relationship between "crunk" and "krunk" is unclear. However, when American Idol judge Randy Jackson appeared on O'Brien's show on 30 April 2004 (nine years after O'Brien's endorsements of krunk), he used the word "krunked", but O'Brien seemed to have no recollection of the word.

In the hit Cartoon Network television show Dexter's Laboratory, there is a character named the Infraggable Krunk (a play on The Incredible Hulk).

Syrup (drink)

Syrup is a recreational drink popular in the Southern United States whose main ingredients originally consisted of some type of prescription cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine, and either soda or fruit juice. Recently, the term has expanded to cover mixtures including over-the-counter cough syrup and vodka in place of prescription cough syrup. Other popular terms for syrup include Barre, Oil, Purple Tonic, Lean and purple drank, highlighting the color of the beverage.'Château d'Barre' is a more expensive version.

Houston producer DJ Screw first popularized the concoction, which is widely attributed as a source of inspiration for the chopped & screwed style. Originally, the active ingredient of Syrup was cough syrup containing promethazine and codeine. [2] On November 16, 2000, DJ Screw died of a suspected overdose of codeine and alcohol [3], possibly related to his frequent consumption of the beverage.

The concoction gained popularity in the underground Houston, Texas rap scene, then spreading to Louisiana.

In 2005, rappers Paul Wall and Mike Jones brought the term to a wider audience with their multi-platinum records, The Peoples Champ and Who is Mike Jones?. The term "sizzurp" came to the forefront as a direct result of Three 6 Mafia's "Sippin' on Some Sizurp.

Some hold that true syrup must contain only promethazine with codeine cough syrup and a relatively clear soda, although the trend's newer adherents commonly replace the promethazine syrup with easier to acquire ingredients, typically either crushed prescription painkillers or vodka and over the counter cough syrup. Since over-the-counter cough syrup does not contain codeine or another narcotic, but instead contains dextromethorphan, a dissociative, these two recipes provide different subjective effects.

Sprite is a popular choice for the soda, as are cream soda and pink lemonade. Jolly Ranchers or cough drops are occasionally added to improve the taste.

The Harlem rap group Dipset market a drink called Sizzurp, which is similar to Hpnotiq .

"Purple drank" was also brought to the masses by the infamous gang DSAW.
