How do you go about into remixing a track? You have the original main lead, arp, bass, pad, etc. but we're remixing a track, right? So it doesn't make much sense if we use all of em (or most of em) cuz it would sound very much like the original mix, right? Would wanna know how u guys start cuz I'm pretty much stuck here with a remix and the due date is drawing near.

i would use the midi file and add my own bass, arp, pads etc.

then with the midi id change a few notes around so it sounds different from the original but the only original part i would use is the melody midi file.

yeah, usually listen to the original a million times, pick out what i like and then take out the rest... add my own direction.

If it's for someone you know, usually you get a nice pack o samples.

agreed with aquarian. the best remixes in my opinion are those ones that are an entirely new song and then at some point in it playing the listener says "oh shit, theres the 'remix' part" cuz then you are really showing your creativity prowess.

Depends on the individual I suppose, but the basis I remix on is that of just getting some samples or an acapella and not listening to the original, at all.

Of course that assumes that assumes that you have access to a sample pack or that someone has asked you to do the remix (i.e. they can send you the samples). If your aim is to remix some popular tune that you've already heard dozens of times, well... good luck trying to be original, it's a major creativity killer for me.

I personally do listen to the original a lot, it sure does influence what I do. I can't deny that, but that doesn't mean listening makes it worse.

I personally just take the elements I like. That could be a specific synth sound, the hook or just the overall sound. Sometimes putting the main hook on the background and creating your own is the trick..

Do what feels right to you, that's all it comes down to in the end.

i tried not to re-use anything else other than the main melody but it's just kinda hard to resist cuz the stuff that he gave me (well, he actually gave me the whole flp) fits so well together. personally, i'd prefer remixes that are totally a new song, and even the main hook sounds different in it (e.g. 8 Wonders - 8th Wonder (Perfect Pitch Remix))...

I take what's yours and make it mine, basically. In other words, I go with the flow. No formula behind it.
