Depends on the individual I suppose, but the basis I remix on is that of just getting some samples or an acapella and not listening to the original, at all.
Of course that assumes that assumes that you have access to a sample pack or that someone has asked you to do the remix (i.e. they can send you the samples). If your aim is to remix some popular tune that you've already heard dozens of times, well... good luck trying to be original, it's a major creativity killer for me.
