TV as second monitor via S-video cable trouble

Hi guys,

Trying to use an S-video cable to hook my TV to my IBM laptop on Windows XP.

I've tried every god damn guide out there, and I still have a blank TV.

I think* my hardware is capable. My laptop is 2.5 years old.

I can get a scrambeled image (looks like its rewritting funny?) by using ALT+CTRL+F2 which is supposed to enable my second monitor (I found this hotkey somewhere in "help") but it also kills my laptop monitor when I do this.

I have tried just about every display setting, lowered my refresh rate, lowered my resolution, etc. which was reccomended to me by Windows.

Can anyone who has done this give me a hand? Thanks so much guys.

Dan

What software are you using?

And do you have to enable the S-Video port in the BIOS at all?

most laptops come equipt with a pre-set hot key function. Usually FN+F5 or F10-F12 somewhere. Should see CRT. Thats the quick suggestion, then you should go into your video settings - right click desktop > properties > settings.

If you have an ATI card with ATI software installed, there might be an ATI tab there or an icon in your control panel.

You need to give us some specifics about what you have installed on the laptop.

I know for a fact ATI has a display program that will allow you to flip through video ports, pan your desktop across multiple screens, replicate your desk top on another screen or add another video output type while working on your laptop screen.

Sorry guys, I'm not too smart w/ comps.

Software? I didn't think I needed any special software... do I? I'm running your basic Windows XP which, from what I understand, should have the capability to run dual monitors?

My graphics card is an Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME.

First I shut down my computer... plug in S-video cord... turn on TV.. turn on computer...

I go to...
Display Properties.... Settings.... I see "1" and "2" monitors. I right click on 2 and click "attached" and the monitor becomes active. I have the color quality and screen resolution at as low as possible. Still I have a blank TV.

The only way I can get anything on my TV is if I push ALT+CTRL+F2 which "enables?" my second monitor. I get this horrible black and white image that jumps all over the place, and meanwhile my laptop monitor shuts off.

BIOS? Not familiar w/ that.

Thanks a ton you guys for the help. I'll owe you an upload or something. Cheers.

Dan

What's the model number of your IBM laptop?

under the 1 and 2 monitors in the display box, is there a drop down menu under it that allows you to load display configurations?

there should be some descriptions in there indicating dual display output. if not try clicking on monitor one then click on monitor two, the options at the bottom should change or try clicking both monitors such that there is a box around both.

i think if you click one of the monitors one is larger while the other is smaller and vice versa, if you are able to do that you should be able to activate both output displays at once.

IBM R51

I'm able to do that Kid, something isn't working. There is a box that says "extend my windows desktop to this monitor" which I have clicked.

Monitors 1 and 2 have different options, 2 has lower resolution and color quality (I was told that TV's cannot support as much resolution as a laptop screen)

I'm going to keep reading and fucking around.

Thanks guys.

Dan

Since you're in the states, I assume your TV is running on NTSC 60 Hz.
Can you switch to pal I / N / something, and check if any difference ?
