or do you believe you're in control of your own destiny?
acknowledging fate indicates a belief in something above yourself, a god or deity(s) if you will.
i do not believe our lives have a pre-game plan put forward for us at birth but rather that we are in control of our own destiny.
maybe it is a little bit of both.
your thoughts.

I believe in fate.
When you were conceived, you were fated to be born a male or female. When you spend all the money you have in the bank, you are fated to be broke. We are all fated to die one day.
fate
1. something that unavoidably befalls a person.
I believe this.
I think you really want to know, "do you believe in destiny"? Most people seem to confuse, or equate destiny and fate. Destiny is a little different.
des‧ti‧ny
2. the predetermined, usually inevitable or irresistible, course of events.
Destiny I believe in, but in a very convoluted manner. I would explain but I can't be bothered to at the moment.

Regardless of whether or not I believe in determinism, I do feel that we can never possibly know the answer to the question you posed, and will therefore live in blissful ignorance of whether or not my free will is actually free, or a mere illusion masking what amount to nothing more than an insignificantly small part of the great cosmic swerve!
And for some reason I can't understand, this feels appropriate for this thread:
quote:
A man said to the Universe: "Sir, I exist!"
"However," replied the Universe, "the fact has not created in me a sense of obligation.

pretty much what she said... but I don't think it is that easy to explain it... at least for me.
That, what ever you do next, leads you in another path to another universe.

i believe in destiny to some extent. i think that things are meant to happen so we can learn specific lessons in life. how we deal with them is up to us, but i think major events happen for some higher purpose, even if it is innate.
