Which summons the emotion in Trance?

Sound (timbre) or melody? Or the combination? Or something else?

I, for one, can be overwhelmed by emotion by just listening to some awesome supersaw sound even though the melody may suck. Doesn't happen much the other way around. I was just interested how you experience it.

It is a combination of the two plus rhythm, and that goes for all music.

There are several things which produce the emotion, at least to my experience.

- A melody with a well chosen synth that plays the melody, combined with epic pads. This creates atmosphere, and the atmosphere can cause emotion. This can be heard for example in Mirco de Govia - Voller Sterne (Super 8 remix).

- Another thing which can cause emotion is something that is not used as often today as it has been earlier. That being a bassline that changes notes as the melody progresses, chosen in a way that makes it sound very uplifting. A nice example, albeit a bit cliche maybe, would be the much appreciated Robert Nickson - Spiral. There are also many tracks out there which have basslines that change while the melody DOESN'T change, but I can't come up with an example of such a track this fast. This can also cause a heavy emotion.

Ofcourse there are so many ways, but these are the ones I like the most. It's not just real Trancey tracks which can cause emotion for me. I remember hearing Rico Soarez - TV Dinner for the first time and it gave me this huge uplifting feeling, and it still does. I couldn't explain what or how the track does that to me though.

IMO, its mostly melody and by saying that, i mean that a good emotional melody is a good emotional melody regardless of the instrument that it is played (be it synths, violins or pianos). The texture of the sound though can definitely have an impact.

I know from biopsychological studies that the auditory cortex of our brains can be "trained" to prefer some specific sounds more than others. This means that the auditory environment can have a great impact on the child's later music preference. The child's large developing synaptic plasticity will be organised in such as way, as to maximally respond to the sounds the child is exposed to.

It is no strange then that i come to prefer "synth" sounds more then other instruments, since my parents were listening to Vangelis and Jarre when i was young.Despite that,IMO a good melody remains a good melody though. Still, there are great philosophical debates on whether there are somekind of platonic standards or invariants of a melody's aesthetic qualities or it is all a matter of interpretation.

lol yeah drugs

but it's hard to say what summons the emotion because everyone may respond differently. i think it just has to do with taste, because emotionally nothing gets "summoned" when i listen to trance music...

other genres (edm or non-edm) seem to do the trick though

I remember I read a while ago that some institute had made a test on many people and had them listen to several tunes and the tune that most people liked the least was Boney M - By The Rivers of Babylon. So that tune is kind of the definition of "pop-music-that-goes-home-in-most-camps"
