Blake Jarrell - Thumpie (Rob Turner Undersea Manatee Mix) [Prog Breaks] 192 Full MP3

This is my first attempt at producing, so I'm sure this will sound very, very green to a lot of you - But I hope at least a few of you find it worthwhile and enjoyable.

Version 2.0 (192kbps VBR)

I also want to say thank you again to both Charley (of "The Hamptons" and "Tyler C" fame) and Blake (Of "Blake Jarrell" fame ), because without the both of their help with the source material, I'd have never finished anything. Massive thanks to you both for getting me started

Happy to hear any thoughts/criticisms you all have - As I said, I'm completely new to production, so I'm sure there will be plenty

Cheers,

Rob

Edit: Link now goes to v2.0

Okay, here we go...

The percs are waaay too simple for a track like this, you'd need plenty of more layers to get this thing moving. Also, variation would really help a lot (sounds like you looped the same bits over and over now).

The melodies are nice (though I don't know the original so I can't say which is you), however there's that blippy background synth in the later part of the track (around 3-4 mins) that sounds out of key at times. I also can't hear any bassline in there at all.

As far as first productions go, I have to say I'm quite impressed. I mean you still have a lot of improving to do but it's quite clear what you want to do and aren't just trying the same generic routine most other newbies are with their first productions. My first production was godawful, I can't stand to listen to it nowadays. I'm glad you started with a much clearer note

Very impressive first production RJT, very nice. Just need some fatter and busier percussion and some bassline.

Good job man

Thanks loads for the feedback, guys!

As far as the percs go - The two things I'm struggling with the most so far are a program to create percussion loops. I've toyed with redrum before, but right now the only program I have is Ableton 5 with a couple VSTi's. I created this tune mostly from one shots and loops solely in Ableton. If any of you all can recommend me a direction to look I'd appreciate it a ton!

And as far as the bassline goes - It's almost the same story. I'm limited by my what I've got, and really beyond Charley and Blake, I don't have much in the way of resources for things right now. This is all my own fault, as I'm just new and don't know where to look - But I'm doing my best to take in as much as I can. I'm such a n00b right now it hurts me

Will definitely be toning down the high hats and fine tuning that last synth line - and I'll keep updates coming.

Thanks again for listening

Links to the original mix??

Listening...

As discussed early by Mysteryman, the percs are rather simple. The driving hihat is ok imo, though adding some variation thoughout the track will colour it up.

The bass drum suits the style of the tune.

You need to add a deep warm bass imo. You need a bassline that will go -50hz and warm the mix up a bit.

The looping sample is really nice. Greats sounds. Progression is simple, it suits the style. To spice it up a little i'd recommending adding some subtle layers to it and weld up the transition between the samples beginning & end. This will help with the tracks flow. A way to do it would be to add a similar pattern layer at a different frequency or to add some more pads. For Example: this tune is similar to a Sasha track; have a listen to Mr Tiddles and forward the track to about the half way mark. Add this point some panning pads are added to the mix & it really elevates the song. You could possibly do something similar.

Excellent first attempt mate!

Thanks Xeno

I've been working on this one all day again today, and think I've made some changes substantial enough to provide an update, so later tonight or tomorrow I'll have v2.0 up

i gave it a listen...

pretty good for a first production.

i don't know how much of the melody is yours, but i like it.

the thing that stood out the most to me was that i had a feeling it was made in ableton, the delay/beat repeat effect or whatever that you used on the percs sounded ableton-esque, and the perc sounds themselves sounded like some ableton percs.

i know, it's all you have to work with atm, but that was my biggest thing. otherwise, everything else has already been covered by mystery & xeno...

you are in dire need of low end, i dont hear any at all.

good work
