I've done the old "straight tonearm vs. S-shaped tonearm" debate before, I'll try and find a discussion on it and put it on my website. That way I can just direct people to it when they ask the same question again.
In the meantime, think this way: S-shaped tonearms give better sound quality and make your records last longer, whereas straight tonearms wear out your records quicker but track better when scratching. Your choice.
I'm afraid I don't know too much about the KAOSS pad, I've never used one. But, I have heard good things about it. Something else to consider is the Alesis AirFX, which is pretty cool, you wave your hand over the top of it to produce effects and it senses the position of your hand.
