On the instrument track, I do not see or have "MIDI sends".
The way you had it set up the first time is the correct way to set up the effect you're trying to achieve. All MIDI controllable fx plug-ins work that way (Glitch, MIDI Gate, etc.).
The MIDI track and the VSTi track that shows up in the mixer are 2 totally different things. Yeah, you can play notes and stuff through the MIDI track on the sequencer, but any inserts you put on the VSTi track are on a completely different track (that's why when you look in the mixer, you have your MIDI track AND a VSTi track for your instrument). Hence, having to create a new MIDI track and assign the output to the plug-in.
Make sense?
