Know the right persons |
LOL! Don't be a douché, most of the producers/djs on here work their arse off doing what they do, they eat, sleep and dream the music they mix and make.
They will have college/university and jobs as well no doubt. They are very devoted to their hobby.
They certianly aint short of talent either. I'd put good money on a lot of dj's here such as DJ BAS, Rob Turner, Hai Lee Chen, to name but a few could given the chance mix the shit out of most big name djs.
As for producers, so many artists are signable/have been signed it's unreal, you got Mr Mystery, who gave a whole album for free, diginut, derrivate, sunquest, serotonin, the list is endless. All of whomb make incredbile music. And they are making pretty much fuck all from it.
So that covers hard work, devotion and talent.
What is left?
Knowing the right people. And that is luck really, being born like 10-20 years befor most of us meant they were around when things started to take shape, they were there to jump on the train.
Seriously, you could prolly never buy another mix cd in your life and only download of Trance addict and you'd get persistent quality mixes week in week out.

What's wrong with listening to both? |
Well-known people in any industry are usually better at what they do than are those who aren't. Of course, there are always plenty of exceptions to go around, but they will usually either remain or sort themselves out. In almost any industry, including music, people become more successful as a result of raw talent, work ethic, and some small dash of other factors like luck and outside help. Those who have at least the first two will almost always rise to the top eventually (no one was born a famous DJ or a professional athlete).
That being said, in this specific case, there's nothing wrong with, and, in fact, it's a very good idea to spend time listening to the work of all sorts of different people--famous and otherwise.
