Moving to Alpharetta for school...

Hey guys,

I'm going to be in Alpharetta for about a year and a half for school. Please help me out, as I don't know what's going on around the area EDM-wise.

- Where's a good place to buy (vinyl) records? Any good shops with DJ-specific selections (new EDM releases, etc)?

- Are there any good clubs in Alpharetta? I know there are some cool places in Atlanta, which isn't too far away.

- Where should I go for good House or Trance or anything-other-than-Breaks-and-Top40? I'm a House-head, but I like a good variety of music.

- I have been throwing events up here in Hickory, NC for about 6 months and DJing for almost 2 years. Any suggestions on where to go to throw events/get booked? Any places to avoid? Georgia DJs please contact me...

-Is there a spins.us type page for Atlanta events, or does everyone generally post events on GA Spins?

- I'm going to Devry University in Alpharetta. Lets nerd out and play Magic of something...

- Anyone up for a "dormwarming" party?

Lived in Alpharetta for the past 5 years...sorry mate, but the cookie-cut lawns, the absence of culture, the lack of interesting locations, and the abundance of traffic patrols has made it a place difficult to enjoy. That might also be due to the highly authoritarian high school I just graduated from, a boring neighbourhood, and lack of transportation. So despite this first passage of warnings, don't be let down.

Places of interest:
1) North Point Mall (Good the first few times because it's huge and has some interesting stores...after that it becomes the primary hang out for blonde bimbos and abercrombie jocks). 5 minutes from Devry.

2) North Point area (Lots of restaurants, mix between cheap and expensive. Two movie theaters, both suck. Only walkable place in Alpharetta that I know.) 5 minutes from Devry.

3) Anatolia (A Mediterranean/Turkish/Middle Eastern restaurant. Very low profile and very laid back. The few guys who work there are cool and very chilled. Food is the 2nd best in Alpharetta that I've tasted. Hookah is abundant. Belly dancers are nice. On Saturday's the place apparently turns into a club. I've only been there once on one of those occasions but it was a person throwing a private party. Nonetheless, the heavy beats (Latina hip hop and techno..sorry no trance), the ghetto set up, and the all-you-can smoke hookah makes it worth going to every once and a while. This would be an idle place to get booked IMO.) 15 minutes from Devry.

4) Regal Medlock movie theatre/surrounding area (Very nice screens, very nice sound, and very nice seating. Not golden screens, but def. worth the $8-$10 you're paying. Surrounding area has ice-cream, coffee, and good food.) 20 Minutes from Devry.

---- following are outside of Alpharetta area ----

5) Lake Lanier (Massive artificial lake further north. Has a few water parks, rentals, etc. Def. worth going if a friend has a boat...chilling out there all day can easily feel like going to the beach.) 25-30 minutes from Devry.

6) Little Five Points (Nice little place just outside downtown Atlanta. Got a lot of record stores, small restaurants/grills, cozy residential area, very walkable streets, and has the coolest people in the entire Atlanta metro area. Hippies, rastafarians, rockers, punks, etc. My favourite place.) 50-80 minutes from Devry..depending on traffic on the highway.

7) Downtown Atlanta (Underground...a miniature city underneath Atlanta. Coke Museum...great if you're into all-you-can drink. Aquarium...expensive but very trippy. Tabernacle...favourite venue for concerts/gigs because it's so ghetto. Masquerade...another ghetto venue for concerts/gigs. Midtown...good for parties/concerts/gigs. Ikea...best food.) 50-80 minutes from Devry..depending on traffic on the highway.

8) Buckhead (smaller city just north of Atlanta...has a lot of clubs. I'd recommend "Eleven50". They play trance and house.) 40-70 minutes from Devry..depending on traffic on the highway.

Good luck with moving in and hope you have fun.

Alpharetta isn't bad at all. It's super nice. All you need is Taco Mac and Pure. These are defintley two of my faves in metro Atlanta. Taco Mac has over a 100 beers on tap, and Pure is a metrofelonious mexican resteraunt with killer margiritas.

could it be that we're both Swedish?

Oh and there are 3 additions to fun things in Alpharetta

Fry's Electronic store: massive electronic store that's perfect for just walking around and chilling. My girlfriend and I have gone over there and popped our own dvds into their presentation room and watched entire movies without being disturbed (Huge projector curtain in a small dark room with an insane sound system).

Armandos: Located near Deerfield Prkwy and Windward Prkwy intersection. It's caribbean/latina style restaurant and has the best food in Alpharetta. It's really cheap and regardless of how busy it is...your food gets done fast.

Joann craft store: Let's just say they sell some boarderline contraband in the florist section.

Welcome to Alpharetta! I recently moved there too. It's pretty nice up here in terms of living but it's dead for nightlife. You'll have to make that 20 minute drive to midtown for that.

You can check out StarTime Entertainment for Go Karts, mini-golf, comedy club, aracade, movies, WhirlyBall, and pool. It's down on Eixt 7. Andretti has better go-kart racing and more video games. THat's on exit 8. The rest is suburbia.
