question...im sure lots of you have digital camera's and you take them to parties..the camera i have is HORRIBLE at taking pictures from the middle of a crowd at night time..regardless of whether im trying to take a picture of the stage (lights and what not) or the crowd itself...the pictures are blurred and just not good quality...the only good thing about it is the video function..its limitless and the quality/sound is very very good...

does anyone have any suggestions on which cameras are best for this type of thing? i usually only use it at parties...mostly outdoor events...thanks!

i would say get a camera that has Av mode (aperture priority) as well as a full Manual mode. and something that supports an aperture as wide as f/2.8

canons or nikons are ur best bet. and in total agreeance with jay on the manual mode. By that, meaning you have control over the exposure settings, iso, white balance

actually, manual mode means you can set your aperture and exposure. it has nothing to do with iso or white balance since you can change those in other modes.

learn your shit before you speak.

edit: also, nikon makes HORRIBLE point&shoot. they are good for dslr. sony and canon make good p&s. even some panasonic p&s are pretty decent these days.

(about the confusion in review thread, i guess it was the grip that makes the xti look bigger)

the panasonic lumix models are very good units from my first hand experience, but they're still not close to the canon P&S's powershot SD550 is a bomb, i think i might buy the display model from work in a few months, either that or the S3IS (12x Optical zoom + IS crazyness).

also, look into the canon SD800 IS. if you dont mind going a little bit bulkier and going to rechargeable AA's instead of li-ion batteries, check out the Canon A630 with vari angle screen, or the a640 if you need the 10 Megapixels, which no one really does.

i love my sony p&s camera. the only thing i wish that they had was a manual setting for exposure instead of just having "night" mode.

well not all cameras allow you to change iso/white balance or at least not as specific. it would have high iso, low auto, or whatever and then auto WB. i was meaning more along the lines of choosing say 80, 100, 200, 400, 800 etc manual wise
