There is some logic to the argument - imagine if it was one of the police cars chasing the guy, and the police car crashed due to the high speed. It could be argued that the guy had responsibility, as the policemen didn't die strictly because of his own actions, but also because he was doing his duty to the society, where he was placed in a very dangerous situation by the suspect.
Now, it can be argued that the news people were also doing their duty to the society (people have the right to be informed, etc)... but it's definitely a stretch.
Since I hate the media overblown sensationalistic bullshit, and the way they cover these persecutions making them look badass and cool to the TV viewers, I say give the darwin award.
