when i first started to going to clubs/parties the dj was always in some far off corner of the room or in some elevated room above the crowd and with tinted glass. now, in many places around here (SF), they are front and center. in mexico (in the few places i've visited) they are still in some far off corner or elevated booth.
i prefer the old design because the music was the emphasis not the dj.

I would agree and disagree. Most of the time it isn't just about the records. Its about the Dj's personality and how he acts behind the decks, the way he gets the crowd going, the atmosphere he brings on the night, for these reasons this is why the dj is at the centre, centre of attention, Star of the show...
It can really depend on the venue. Top 40 clubs still often keep the DJs off to the side because they aren't the focus of the night: the people in the club are. Other places do have the DJ at the center, but primarily because they are performing on a stage that's usually used by rock bands whom have long been center-focus of an event.
As for ravey raves and whatnot, I figure the DJ booth was placed front and center because all the regular speakers were there as well, and it was simply easier for the tech crews to have all your gear in the same area.

a lot clubs have deejay booths front, center, and raised. I can think of a handful in nyc that i frequent with booths in the corner. They are generally all raised and opened though.
I saw steve lawler at rebel here in nyc and that booth is essentially a window high up in a wall on the far side of a long, tall dark room with cages. there was so much smoke that lawler only appeared as a dark blob in front of a red glow in the fog.
the coolest booth i've ever seen was in a pit on a terrace on the top floor of the spanish cultural center in mexico city, right behind the metropolitan cathedral. the dj was silently dictating the party, unknown to most except for the ridiculousness of the music and quality mixing
there was an argument about this in the thread i linked - basically i agree with spacey orange that the music is the emphasis. too many deejays rely on personal theatrics and not dramatic mixing or music selection

The DJ should be tucked away in some little corner.

DJ is the G0d. What do you say ? People staring at him from below and above.

whether or not the dj is front and center or hidden is an argument in of its own.. i believe its importatn for the dj however ot have an eye on the crowd to see how his songs are felt by the crowd and help dictate the flow because crowd reading is critical
