we were just having a talk about this in the e6850 thread.

would seem ableton holds up well with them. MAYBE not as well as some others, but still enough to warrant getting a multi-core!

in general though, most audio progs don't handle multithreading all that well. personally i would stick to dual cores, rather than quads. it's up to you though!

I can't speak for quad core, but I know that dual core is handled well by ableton. I got a significant increase in track count by running a core2 duo over an old centrino. Part of that may be to do with the new architecture + instruction set (SSE 2) which I'm told makes programs run faster. But a lot must be to do with the 2 cores.

Quad core is a different matter. I wouldn't neccesarily think that you'll get double the performance compared to a dual core because of the basic power used in scheduling the threads. I don't even know whether ableton will support quad core for that matter. But you may as well get a quad, because its the current technology and eventually programs will support it; you certainly won't do any harm to your performance by buying a 2.26 quad rather than a 2.26 dual.

A side note you probably know about; DON'T buy Vista. Make sure you get XP because vista will chew up about 1 Gig of RAM, XP can be optimised to only use about 300 MB. Even without that, Vista won't run many music apps with any reliability at the moment.

Hope this helps
Kit
