Necessary Illusions - Classic Canadian documentary about Western media propaganda (1980's).."Modern industrial civilization has developed within a certain system of convenient myths. The driving force of our industrial civilization has been individual material gain, which is accepted as legitimate, even praiseworthy......."
All my news come from Colbert and Stewart. No wonder I'm so ill-educated and totally unaware of what's going on in the world.

It's actually a "grass man" argument. I'm not dry to the point of being considered a "straw" just yet. Nice of you to see it for what it really is - "bunch of blather". Mission accomplished.

I'm really happy that I found that now as I hadn't previously heard of The Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 (22 U.S.C. '1461)

Adam Curtis definitely has my respect for shedding light on the propagandization of America by Edward Bernays in his Century of the Self series. ([[ LINK REMOVED ]]
)
It goes into mild detail about how Bernays used propaganda in order to condition the American public into thinking that we were overthrowing the (democratically elected) government of Guatemala for the benefit of it's people (and not for that of the United Fruit Co.)
Here's a good excerpt:

I rarely watch more than an hour of tv a day anymore..
In the eyes of posterity it will inevitably seem that, in safeguarding our freedom, we destroyed it. The vast clandestine apparatus we built up to prove our enemies' resources and intentions only served in the end to confuse our own purposes; that practice of deceiving others for the good of the state led infallibly to our deceiving ourselves; and that vast army of clandestine personnel built up to execute these purposes were soon caught up in the web of their own sick fantasies, with disastrous consequences for them and us.
