Not quite true, I've dropped my Ortofons on the strobe dots quite a few times! I can't see it happening with Stantons though, the cartridge around the needle is too big for the needle itself to actually touch the strobe dots.
All that snap crackle and pop is probably just record noise, there's not really a lot you can do about it. You can minimize it by cleaning your records and your styli regularly, but you'll never get rid of it completley. It's just one of those features of vinyl
