if you love real house music (or pretend to) you'd surely recognize both of these names as pioneers and innovators of the deep sound. this one will be tight. a steal for $10.
"Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ." Welcome to the merry world of Theo Parrish's music. A mind of (and in a league) of his own, the Chicago-raised, Detroit resident is the legitimate heir and conscience of a DJ school that stems from ancestors like Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles or Andre Hatchett, radio shows on WBMX and clubs like the Muzic Box. As anyone who has experienced a Theo Parrish set can testify, the work of this consummate architect of sound envelopes the listener, and transmits new perspectives on club sonics. Maltreating the eqs, playing vinyl like a self-contained vamped instrument, fusing soul, jazz, house and disco into one capacious ardent ball is all part of Theo's musical expression. He can fuse the rhythmic, Disco-based pulse of Chicago house with the modernist motorik soul of Detroit techno, while at the same time pointing to a lineage in black music that runs directly from Sun Ra to Sound Signature. "Jazz spawned house music, jazz spawned hip hop, jazz spawned funk and they all reflect back into that," he says. This applies as well to the songs and tracks from Parrish's own pockets. His label Sound Signature provides an adventure playground for vital drum machines, touch-and-go arrangements, regal synths and some of Detroit's finest soul music talents. So if you want to see the future via the raw, soulful roots of house music, then you've come to the right teleporter.
Ron Trent's musical journey began at the early age of 14 in Chicago with the raw beauty of a track called Altered States, a timeless underground classic which catapulted Ron into the hall of fame of house and techno. Schooled by the flourishing scene of the windy city in the late 80s, Ron made a name for himself as a DJ who would introduce rare disco and soul classics into the Chicago house blend. Deeply influenced by artists such as Larry Heard, Roy Ayers or even Pat Metheny and always aimed to create a unique sound, Ron focused on production and formed his legendary record label Prescription in 1993 alongside Chez Damier. Together they defined a whole era, creating some of the brightest moments in the history of House music. The duo also produced some seminal singles for Detroit's KMS imprint and later even worked with Berlin's Maurizio/Basic Channel. After moving to NYC in 1998 Ron produced and remixed the likes of Groove Collective, Amel Larrieux, Tony Allen and 4Hero, while putting out a string of remarkable 12”s with Anthony Nicholson for his Clairaudience label and two heavily underrated full length albums. Still travelling the world as an in demand DJ, Ron Trent recently moved back to Chicago and relaunched Prescription Records. Pop, dip and spin!
