I recently was promoted to a sales manager and yesterday for the first time in my life fired someone, an older guy that was twice my age for constantly not meeting sales quotas. It was a bad experience for me since I liked him and didn't think he deserved the boot yet. The look in his eyes was like I just told him of a death, like life as he knew it was over. After he left my office, he wondered around, and didn't say a word to anyone for about an hour as the day was ending, he used the restroom about 3 times and most likely was feeling useless and confused of what had just happened. Finally he left but he forgot his bag. I ran after him to give him his bag. I have never been fired myself but its gotta be an awful feeling. After he left I heard some employees laughing about the situation, two of them are also close to being let go as we are trying to get rid of the people not producing enough sales before the year ends. I think I will actually enjoy firing them after they laughed at someone else's misfortune.

Never had to fire someone, nor have I been fired.
But yeah, it must be the worst feeling in the world. Especially since it's so close to Xmas and all.
But if he wasnt performing then that's his fault. He's got no one else to blame but himself.

Well it's not really misfortune right? if the man was producing the results required he wouldn't have been let go. my question was what did the company do leading up to it i.e. did they give him opportunities to improve on his sales, give him sales training, etc?
I've had to dismiss two people in my previous role as a call centre team leader, and both were friends outside of work. I found it challenging but also necessary as their lack of performance was affecting the business. Neither were surprised actually.
I felt relieved once they were gone, and today still are in contact with both of them. A manpower representative actually handled the firing coz both were contractors, but I was involved in the entire process, explaining to the people the reasons behind the decision, etc.

LOL now that Trump is famous for that line I wonder if his employees take it seriously when he's actually firing them. I'd be like "you're going to say it aren't you? C'mon SAY IT!!!"

Maybe that's because you associate negative experience around it. What if it's true that by letting them go you're actually giving them a chance to face the truth that they weren't contributing to the organisation to the best of their potential, or that they have room for improvement? With that feedback they can endeavour to do better at their next job and be successful.
Even if it's a company restructure you normally keep your strongest performers and let go of the average ones.
Yeh it's tough, but nobody said life was meant to be easy. We all have bills to pay and face tough times in our lives, but we're all capable of overcoming those challenges. It surprises me when some people see getting fired as being the end of the world. If somebody knew the risk, then why would they continue down the path that would lead to that outcome? Know what I mean? I don't know, I just choose to see it as opportunity rather than defeat or something bad.
In fact, I'm working out ways to be my own boss so there's no chance of anyone ever firing me

I've heard mondays but it depends on perspective.
From the company's perspective I'd think Friday was good because on Monday I'd (as a manager) want to start fresh and not have to deal with the fallout (if any) during the rest of the week. Do it on Friday, everyone has the weekend to accept it and back to work Monday.
From the employee's perspective, it might mean they have a not so positive weekend but it also might mean they celebrate finally getting out of that shitty job or time to look forward in their lives.

according to the movie office space Friday is the best day to fire someone as there's less chance of having a 'conflict'
