Jester How do you BACKUP your data?

Well, here's the deal: you got some relatively small amount of personal data (say: 500 MB) and some greater amount of media data (music library, around ~ 50 GB) on your desktop at home. How do you efficiently backup, store and retrieve your files?

My solution for personal data: backup script for personal data to local (USB drive) and remote (WebDAV connected space) places, software RAID for music library while rotating mirror drives every month. Any different proposals?

external hard drive
and putting burnt backup dvds offsite ( what's the point of backing up your data let's say .... 50 times ... if it's all in the same location and there's a fire? )

When funding allows I'll consider a raid solution

Agreed, that's the reason for me also rotating the harddrives through different locations ... and storing encrypted personal data off site in remote places. Moreover, a decent hierarchical backup system saves space herein.

External 500GB hard drive using Seagate's Discwizard backup software. Works very well and gives me peace of mind.

Same here. Converted an old internal WD to an external and just back up important poersonal files on it. And if I need to reformat or things start to break down on my desktop, I will back up other things.

I never back up anything other than sensitive personal documents from my laptop because it runs Ubuntu and I haven't ever had a problem and probably won't ever reformat.

well worth the $5 a month to backup unlimited amounts of data off-site. that way, if my house burns down or a major earthquake wipes out my area, I can still retrieve my important data across the country.

If mozy only supported Linux as operating system ... but there's no way for me to use it with an emulation layer on a mission-critical machine. Otherwise, the idea is just great to add another bit of data security for an affordable price of $ 5.

This should only be feasible for really low-footprint sized data, such as private keys or revocation certificates -- as proposed by GnuPG -- to be locked away in a secure storage area.
