Modern Tech House, Berliner Trance, and Contemporary Trance
All of these genres, I think, have a fair bit of overlap in them - yet are quite clearly their own sounds (i.e. no one would call Richard Durand "tech house" or "berliner trance") - I guess the simplest way to put it is that they share a lot of similar samples and noises.
I'm going to be the first to admit - what I initially called trance may well have been more prog house than anything else (99 era Sasha and Digweed, some Oakenfold, etc. - though I realize these labels are all highly contentious as it is).
The thing is - I've had this overwhelming feeling lately that what I'm playing these days is more "trance" than just about anything else out there being called trance these days. This is my own opinion, and should not be taken as me claiming "Modern 'trance' isn't trance." I guess I just feel like a lot of the tracks I've been picking up and playing lately, and especially the last two promo mixes I've done, have been mired in trance noises.
The Point: What do you all think about the re-emergence of a lot of old school trance sounds (and I guess berliner trance/techno) in modern tech-house, techno, and minimal? Do you think that is more "trance" than what is actually labeled as "trance" today by sites like Beatport and Juno?
For my part, I feel like it's been a natural progression from that 99 era stuff, and even as far back as early 90's Underworld, to where I am now (hence the thread), but thought it might be an interesting topic to discuss here as I know there will be very mixed opinions.

I'm all for it, let them keep calling the garbage ASOT type tracks "trance" so it is easy for me to avoid that shit while the best parts of what was trance are pulled into the other genres

I don't think it's trance influence per say, but most likely that you are just fond of melodic music. And no doubt about it the best tech-house/techno being released right now most of the time has in one way or another melodic characteristics or some kind of atmosphere that can definitely be compared to late 90's prog. I for one also enjoy more the atmosphere-ish, trancey, tech realm of music as of late, and I wouldn't be surprised if I knew that a lot of the producers making stuff like that right now were into trance/prog back in the day.
I prefer the music I listen to currently to have more house and techno influences than trance and prog influences.

I don't see it to be honest. The only trend I see is music with the bpm range of 120-130. To me there's all kinds of tech-house/techno being released these days. From 80'-early 90's house influence to late 90's prog influence to the minimalistic stuff. Then again to be fair I'm no near as avid clubbers as you guys.

Nah - I think disagreement on this issue is totally fair, and to be honest, I'm not much of a clubber anymore either. Gigs have become in a bit shorter supply (though not nonexistent), real life beckons, and I don't really care for the bulk of the music I can hear out at clubs anymore.
And to be honest - perhaps it's just me once again calling old school epic house and delta heavy era prog sounds "trance" yet again, which I'm sure will raise the ire of at least a few folks

But thats really basically what it is. It's not trance in the sense of The Anthem because trance as we know it today is just pop music basically.
But the basic way the songs work is trance to me.
Shmuel Flash - Chilling Moments, the old bedrock, its all trance that just evolved out of its 90's shell and took on a slightly refined form.
And yeah that will probably piss people off.

trance is only what you call 'berliner trance'.
everything else is prog trance and variations, or prog house and variations
i don't really see what you're trying to accomplish when you say your music is trance.
is it entrancing? yeah, but this relativistic description of trance music has been used by everyone and their grandmother to make the same claim. eg "ASOT".
all of the people who were into that stuff in the late 90s and early 00s are today championing so-called minimal tech house with the same sounds

I wouldn't say all of it because I've never heard of Hawtin playing Quivver back in the day and then switching onto Techno, but yeah I can see where you guys are coming from. Especially most of the stuff that Sasha, Digger, Pappa, Howells, Blades, Seaman, Warren and so on are playing today; I can see how it is connected to trance...in some way.
