The headline caught my eye from today's National Post, I haven't had a chance to read the article yet, so I can't comment. Thought you may want to see it.

the use of pesticides, banned by Ontario; Undecided on this one

clear plastic baby bottles, banned by the federal government; hmmm dont know bout this one..

the sale of bottled water, banned by the Waterloo Region District School Board in Ontario; I am for that. Why buy bottles of water when the tap water is perfectly fine. I bought large bottles at Walmart and I keep refilling them. Yes bottles are recyclable, but man in a week you can have dozens of em to recycle..

Styrofoam, banned by Turner Valley, Alta.; I dont get that one.

using cell phones while driving, banned by Nova Scotia and Quebec; All for that, drivers are bad enough without being on the phone


smoking in cars with children, banned by Nova Scotia and Ontario; All for that. Parents smoking during pregnancy or in the car with their kids in unacceptable


the sight of cigarettes in corner stores, banned by Alberta, Ontario and Quebec; all for that


IMO a good amount of the above bans are perfectly fine!

I'm sure I'll roll my eyes at half of it.

For the majority of these things the Government shouldn't be involved anyhow. Adults can make their own decisions......we are not complete retards....although I question that more and more everyday.

1. If they are banning the use of pesticides then what is the government giving the farmers as an alternative? If the government provides a better and cheaper alternative then fine stop using pesticides.

2. Clear Plastic Baby Bottles - let the parents make their own educated decision....if the parent feels its a danger then they can use something else.

3. Bottled Water in School - if the kids don't want to drink water from the tap then let them have the choice.

4. Cell Phones in Cars - might as well ban drinking, eating, listening to the radio, talking and everything else people do in a car as they are all distractions to driving.

5. Smoking in cars with children - Although I agree that you shouldn't...the government shouldn't be telling people they can't. So next its you can't smoke outside if there is a kid within 20 feet of you.

6. Sight of Cigarettes - the government shouldn't be telling stores they can't show what they are selling when its perfectly legal to sell them. Although this is completely stupid as most stores have little written signs on the covers so they know which cigarettes are where.

I am going to start a petition to ban the consumption of alcohol outside of your own residence. I don't think anyone should be allowed to drink alcoholic beverages outside the confines of their own residence.....no more alcohol at bars, restaurants, clubs or anywhere else. Also, you are not allowed to transport alcohol in a motorized vehicle.

Agreed. But, even if we are / have become complete retards, its to an extent a result, i think, bc of stuff like this. we no longer seem to have to or need to make these smart, right, or better decisions. The government is making them for us. This breeds a kind of "let them think for me" mentality.

I think if it all came back down to us to decide wrt to situations that only affect us (ie. laws forcing us to seat belts, helmets, etc.), you'd start to see more sensibility slowly creep back up into our society…

Sure w/o the law FORCING you to wear seat belts (making it illegal NOT to), you'll have some more deaths... but really, that was each individual's stupid choice to make for themselves – not the government’s right or job to forbid it. And once enough ppl die, a realisation will dawn on society and ppl in general that "hey, yah, u know what, even if they seemed at first kinda annoying, i still wanna wear my seat belt bc it protects me"

So ull have (eventually) ppl doing things not bc they are forced to, but bc it makes sense and is safer -- they will do it for themselves. And this would be a much better society to live in, when ppl think for themselves and take responsibility for themselves.

Exactly. We (human society) are in a state of reverse evolution right now, and we need to change that and re-begin evolving again.

If anything.....the different levels of government have to make available all information regarding these types of issues and then allow us to make an informed decision. If after knowing all that is available to us and we still make a stupid decision then its our own fault.

It is not just clear plastic bottles. It is bottles that contain Bisphenol A, a substance now classified as toxic for small children as it modifies the growth of the pituitary gland. There has been a long standing debate about it, but after reading the research, I was convinced this was a good move.

They have allowed the chemical to be continued to be used in cans, which is a good thing as there is no cheap alternative right now.

Chem, there is no way that the average parent would know how to search, research or even know what the research means most of the time. We have regulatory bodies for a reason, because every Canadian cannot be, and should not be expected to research every material and product they buy. It just would be practical for the entire population of the country to do that much research. You know, economies of scale?


As for water bottles in schools: it was a cost thing. It was costing the government too much in recycling costs to haul around the water bottles, as they get paid per tonne. Since the density of water bottles is so low, they were taking up too much room in their trucks. I know I know, what about all the other bottles?

That's why its up to the government to make this information available....its not up to the government to just go around banning things because they feel people wouldn't understand or know how to find the information. Yes, in some cases, the government will have to prevent the sale of items containing certain things....and that is fine....as you said there are regulatory bodies for reasons. Unfortunately, the Government doesn't listen to everything and they have a knee jerk reaction which leads to ban after ban.

For this certain substance, they had a huge investigation, and a public question and answer. And, they are still in the process of actually classifying it with further public input. Don't just assume they 'just banned' it, because you or others around did not take part.
