I played with the demo of the actual plugin without DNA using some acapellas, and it only works partially. What you really need is a clean vocal with no effects for it to work best. Trying to use the plugin on an effected vocal provided mixed results.

ah eric you're missing the best part (and possibly thinking of a different version because demo isn't online until march i heard)... but this thing can take apart polyphonic sounds! that's right, play a chord into melodyne and you will see the representation on the piano chart!

Yeah that definitely intrigued me. I have only played with the non-DNA version. I'm fixing to start working with some vocal tracks, so this thing just jumped to the top 3 in my priority list.

but can it distinguish between instruments?

ie: c chord on strings, e on some kind of lead; would it split the two?

Yes it can split the two.

What it essentially does it analyse the audio for harmonics, so I think the main issue with it is going to be that it'll pick up notes that aren't there in some cases, and won't pick up notes that are there in other cases.
This won't be an issue if your just rearranging a string section for example, but will be a problem if your trying to extract a midi file. I imagine in some cases, if you have strings playing the same note as the vocals were singing, you would find that some of the vocal's harmonics might wind up in the string and vice versa.
