On a related note, Sound On Sound magazine published an article in this months issue on how to optimize Vista for audio.
Much of it is the same as XP: Set processor scheduling to prioritize background services, turn off windows audio, get rid of power-saving options that mess with the processor, make sure all hard drives have DMA enabled.

It also debunked an optimization myth from XP(and is still relevant on Vista). It's better to let windows handle the memory usage, like the page file, so don't manually set the page file or whatever else. Windows generally knows best, in this case.

All in all, on the average system there's not much you can do to optimize a system for audio, other than keeping the OS clean of bad programs and whatnot.

There is an XP DAW edition as I'm using it myself however it is VERY stripped down, including anything network related, so if you plan to use your PC for anything other than strictly music production, I wouldn't recommend it. What I would recommend instead is one of the Performance Editions. I'm using the September build of Performance Edition XP SP3 on another computer and its working great.

There is no official DAW Edition or Performance Edition available from Microsoft. There is only XP Home, XP Professional and XP Media Center Edition. Be advised that if you see anything labeled "DAW Edition" or "Performance Edition" then it is most likely from an unofficial source so be prepared to take on any risks associated with using Microsoft software that is not genuine.
