What do you guys think are the most vital/important aspects of having a good studio to produce quality tracks? (besides the expensive software/vst/equipment) - im talking more in the sense of computers/power/soundcard.

Always get the most powerful computer you can afford at the time. It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Computers double in power every 18 months, and programmers will always find a way to use up that power.

You want the fastest computer you can afford if you are producing & mixing in the box.

I actually think you should buy the best value for money computer, and if you have money left over, put it aside for the more powerful computer that will be released a year or so down the track.

You'll want to build it yourself to save loads of cash and get better components. Also, in a year or so time when new more powerful whatever comes out you can buy just that part assuming it is compatible no need to new computer.

On the slickdeals.net forums and main page, there are quite often very good deals for Dell PCs and such. A lot of the time, it'll be cheaper than building it yourself. And for a studio computer, all you should care about is CPU, RAM, loudness (quiet fans).

But the advantage of building it yourself is you're absolutely sure of what's in it, there's nothing you don't need, and you can build it to be quiet.

I recommend a quad core CPU. There are oct core CPUs coming out; they'll be expensive but very poweful.... maybe even... too powerful.

Processor speed, memory, audio interface etc are all critical, but I'd argue that there is an even more important aspect to consider...

Stability.

I find nothing kills creativity faster than an unstable computer that crashes all the time. I'd rather have a P4 2ghz with 512mb ram running completely stable, than a bleeding edge quad core machine that blue screens or crashes out of Cubase every two minutes.

Without meaning to sound like an Apple zealot, since moving over to a MBP and Logic 8 I've had no stability issues at all. It's been great!
