I produce progressive house and trance, and I don't use sidechain. If you like that pumping sound from sidechaining, then use it. I don't really think it's necessary though. Like said here already, the main reason sidechain was used in the first place was to make it so the kick and bass could be heard clearly. That can be accomplished in other ways, with good kick and bass selection, a little compression, and sometimes EQing. It might be a matter of style though, I don't want a booming kick in my tunes, I like them low and deep. Sidechain is not mandatory for trance. In fact, it seems kind of old school to me. Also, seems to sometimes be used as an easy fix for a colliding bass and kick.
